Why do Western Europeans not like the US?

May 6, 2019 44 Comments

Like the title says. I have spent 1 year in Europe and one thing I noticed was that most of them have a slight disdain for the States. I am not a citizen of the US myself to take this personally or anything, but I am just curious as to why this is so. Usually in other parts of the world, people aspire to work here, if only for the pay.

Because standard of living there is much better. People seem happier and chilled out. Here we are still chasing higher TC in this rat race.

Now I get it. Sorry, missing on sarcasm a lot today.
Yep, I agree. Eg, I love Italy, but most Italians can’t afford going to Venice.
Half of the country is poor and criminal.

Though I must say Europeans know better how to make things beautiful, and Americans are much better in making things comfortable.
And at this point of my life I value comfort over the beauty.

Western Europeans think of Americans as extravagant, wasteful, boastful, rude, a bit crazy, greedy, and perhaps most of all, unaware of the world outside the US.

The last part at least is likely due to how little the US varies between the States, and how most Americans don’t travel much outside the US.

Nice analogy. One thing I would add is that the little brother is out there killing it AND he knows it.

It’s kinda like the little brother in Step Brothers but more successful. Confidence (or some might say arrogance) is something pretty ingrained in the culture.

  • America shows the rest of the world how to be a great and prosperous country. Without this beacon, the Eurocrats can easily convince their populace that they are getting the best.

Hold on that thought. Universal healthcare, free education and cheap mortgage make European citizens way more prosperous in the end. Imagine, you don’t have any student loans, you don’t have to save for your kids education, and your mortgage rate is 1.5%, and you can leave off unemployment benefits for at least 2 years.

I immigrated to the US from Europe when I was young and sometimes go back. I wouldn’t say Europeans hate Americans but they do have a less favorable view against Americans than Americans have on Europeans.

Things move much, much faster in the US as evidenced by the country’s hyper growth on the past 2 centuries, which causes somewhat of a superiority complex (probably rightfully so). This complex is what I think rubs Europeans the wrong way.

Its not just Europeans who hate Americans. Though hate is a strong word, I live in Europe and this is why . 1. Americans are not cultured - there is a difference between having culture and being cultured, the latter refers to manners, upbringing, being well bred etc. Most Europeans behave a lot better than Americans do and their manners, are much better. 2. American superiority complex - America is the greatest country on earth - NOT. No-one outsise of America believes this, yes sure third world country people make a beeline to the US but its for the money, more than anthing else 3. Blatant capitalism - profit at the cost of people, society and values. dont think I need to elaborate here 4. Trump - they mostly pity Americans since the media highlights trump (most europeans enjoy trumps antics and believe Americans are making fools of themeselves, and theres a lot of jokes on this ..p***grabber ...anyone) , I also believe the idea of living without social security and paying through your nose for college makes them nod their heads in disbelief. Most Europeans are well travelled and Americans are not so I believe they the fat, stupid and redneck maga hat wearing sterreotype is not really a stereotype to them at all.

Kaspersky Lab aye dais.1. You say snobbery but when a bunch of American Marines offduty, get told off for trashing Beer Bottles and carving their names with a pen knife into the walls of the Porta Nigra, I dont think its about Europeans being pompous. Just this morning the peaceful morning commute was disrupted by an American lady holding a really loud conversation on the tram. Total oblivion and disrespect for others. That is the American way.
      2. I disagree, there are aspects of individual countries that we believe are great but it is completely classless to tout yourself as the greatest nation on earth. Propoganda and there are so many Americans who are taught this is school. Sad.
      3. Why then do i have to dodge veterans begging for money everytime I visit the states. why is the bill of equal rights for women not signed in every state? why do women not have body autonomy ? Why are kids being shot in schools ? So where is the spending for social needs going?
      4. Why do we have to be proud of our leaders. we elect them to their position and we remove them if they dont perform, we remove them if they condone Nazi rallies and as far as I go we do not allow sexual predators in positions of office.
Refusal to accept just means things are going to hit rock bottom while you still keep calling the US the greatest country. Ciao

Western Europe is a blend of socialism and capitalism. They abhor pure capitalism and think that they know better than Americans. Many of them don't know how far behind they are from US and even China. If US pulls out of NATO, they are sitting ducks.
