Amazon is the largest public cloud and largest retailer, has innovated in Drone technology and supply chain. Microsoft is the consumer desktop giant, produces leading Office suite and is the second largest public cloud. Microsoft Research is considered to be #1 in the world. Google is a search engine with additional consumer products like email, YouTube (acquisition) and some other products. They definitely are leading in the data/information space but that is sort of covered in search engine. Facebook is a social networking website. It has some popular apps it acquired including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. Why is that Amazon and Microsoft are considered shit companies whereas Google and Facebook are considered where the best engineers are? How are Tier 2 engineers producing more impactful work than Tier 1 engineers? Consider that the disappearance of Amazon or Microsoft from Earth would be far more impactful to humans than if Facebook were gone. I suppose Google is similar in that it is search, but it just doesn’t add up for me. 90% of the reason I’m thinking of leaving Microsoft is because of Blind. It’s human to be and work with the best but is that really true? Note I consider Apple similar to Amazon and Microsoft. #tech #amazon #microsoft #google #facebook #apple
Compare average TC each level and you’ll find out.
Unrelated: How is Okta doing? You going to quit any time soon?
We are hiring a lot, happy to refer you. Hint: our sde2 refresher is comparable to L65.
I think it’s about TC
With AMZN stock growth TC is higher if you have worked for 5+ years and got promoted.
I should edit my post (don’t know how to) that what I worry about is if all the good people leave Apple/Intel/Amazon/Microsoft/NVIDIA/AMD the stuff I ACTUALLY use will become shittier over time and stuff that I don’t use will have smart people doing average work. I’m worried about humanity. Not trolling I actually worry about this.
Have faith in market theory and capitalism
You are over simplifying the complex idiots called humans. We are irrational, I’ve seen some of the best and brightest working in same shit for 20+ years without giving a thought about they could make 3-4 times TC. I’ve also seen idiots who would get fired gitting 3 times the pay the progress switching to higher TC company. there’s also self selection and lethargy that keeps things moving, apart from momentum of universe.
Seems you are just cherry-picking information that fits your narrative. For instance, no one considers MS research better than google research. G has made by far the biggest contributions to computer science over the last 20 years with GFS, MapReduce, k18s, etc etc etc etc the list is extremely long. Not to mention being a leader in AI. Microsoft on the other hand, ??? Also you seem to be grading projects by their number of users (saying excel is the best), but only one way. You forget that Android is the most widely used phone OS in the world Etc etc TLDR it really isn’t TC/wlb when it comes to G vs the rest. Donno about fb. I do agree that AMZN is technically underrated, and that msft is great. But you are overreaching and it’s a bad look
I don’t think gfs, map reduce etc is coming from g research. Also ms publishes far more papers than g and very prestigious among research community
Confirmed in academia, MSR postdoc is super prestigious. I know people getting faculty positions at top schools in the US after doing postdocs there. In AI nowadays maybe Google Research edges out, but for rest (all other CS subfields + economics + some biology), MSR is the best.
Cuz good leetcoder won’t go to MSFT or amzn
Microsoft and Amazon treat their employees like sh** tc-wise.
Are you really L67? 🤦♂️ G/FB have better TC, perks, benefits, culture and engineering quality. Engineers are much smarter and the culture is better (less politics, backstabbing, etc). I moved from Microsoft. It is not about how big the company is or its market share. It is how much it benefits me as an employee. At Google I make more money, have more wlb, getting better benefits and perks, learning from better engineers, and more. At L67 these differences start to disappear and things get better for Microsoft but at lower levels they are much more apparent. Regards, L4 (L61-L63). TC: $430k, 5 yoe, Seattle
Thanks for your reply. Yes, why do you ask if I’m really L67?
Because I assume that you are smart enough to figure this out but maybe you didn’t work at lower levels at Microsoft
Agree, when I was at Msft my peers are from IBM, T-mobile, banks. At okta usually they are from AAMG
All about the tc and wlb
Sure, but for example I hope you don’t quit Intel. I like my fast CPUs.
Sorry, at G now 😪
