Will PayPal eventually try to do that, given their large merchant base ? Will it make sense for them to build this within or merge/acquire affirm? Is affirm CEO, previous PayPal founder, setting sail for a merger/acquisition ? Seems like a threat and an opportunity. #e-commerce #retail #lending #merchant #finance

Only thing that paypal need is the engine to process buyer’s credit worthiness and rest is all easily doable
Right question is which would be cheaper develop it all or buy affirm
That’s a tough call, I interviewed with affirm in multiple backend teams, they have a lot going on in their engineering departments. I don’t know how good is paypal’s engineering though. In terms of t product, the impression I have is paypal has early adoption advantage and have just been acquiring companies at high prices using the cashflow, like venmo, honey, happy returns, etc and that’s what keeping them busy. But somehow it feels they should compete rather than acquire to prove themselves in the emerging market of fin-tech.
Yea somewhat similar PayPal offers a line of credit while affirm offers short term financing
I think it’s a different mentality with the same end result. You don’t have to go to PayPal first, you can sign up for Credit during the payment flow. However, unlike Affirm, the merchant doesn’t have to “sign up” to accept a Credit product since it’s between you and PayPal, while Affirm needs the merchant to integrate with them.
True seems easier, when did this come to play before or after affirm ?
We do have buy now pay later product which is paying in 4 installments
Why tho? Right now it’s solid cash, why increase debt lending money
Let’s fight
I really hope Affirm never gets bought by PayPal and end up like Braintree. Affirm will sell if they are giving up being market leader in the long term or stop caring about engineering quality. But who knows.

PayPal bought the first iteration of BNPL company, the category starter Bill Me Later, in 2008.
You mean like https://www.paypal.com/workingcapital/ ?
No I mean for the customer, say I want to buy a TV online on credit , just like affirm does
No. Don’t you know what affirm/afterpay/klarna are?
