What are the consequences? Can it lead to termination?
There is nothing wrong with providing your TC. But you can not expect the others to provide theirs. Many don't because it can lead to jealousy. Blind is a good way to be informed.
Blind is not accurate enough, I’m looking for more accurate view which I think a trust worthy colleague can provide; I’m interested to know if such a discuss will result in a visit to HR office
No HR issues if the peer is willing to share comp info, that is good. But to know a true market rate, you do want to also get information from other companies for similar roles.
Also, if you have worked hard to negotiate a better compensation why would you make that evident.
To test your negotiation skills? May be you didn’t get a fair salary for your skill set
It is illegal for an employer to punish you for disclosing your salary.
Salary is seen by employees as how much they are valued by the company. You being paid more or less than your peer will immediately raise questions in your mind ... and then you ask the management— lawsuits etc can follow. Therefore not a good idea!
I already have doubts, how can I confront my manager and ask for a raise?
Quote anonymous sources and market data.
Because I don’t want my real life to be as toxic as on Blind?
They will first ask you —- how do you know and how do you know it’s true. Then based on your response, they’ll respond
What if I respond honestly and say we discussed over lunch, can it lead to trouble?
It will fuck things up with the other person who shared his salary and create chaos
From my understanding, it is not illegal to discuss salaries at work. An employer cannot prohibit employees from discussing salaries. The reason why we don’t do it is because it would create a toxic work environment and you might lose trust with your manager
It's just cultural. In India, almost everyone knows everyone else's salary. Probably the same with East Asian countries.
Wait how does that work in India? Is it transparent or people just gossip?
You can literally ask how much are you getting paid, with the breakdown. I met a friend for dinner yesterday and we know each other's exact pay and bonus for the last 2 years. Literally "How much do you get paid?" No dumb trolling on Blind and levels.fyi nonsense. Our entire 'dorm' from my University knows each other's pay. We're in 4 different countries.

It would tend to put pressure on management. 🤔
That’s it, who cares about pressure on management.
"Oh you only make this much? You must be incompetent." Oh the shame of transparency. Wouldn't everyone rather hear that they're awesome and get paid top salary. Continue the fairytale lies and feel good.
