Sure, it doesn’t have many tech opportunities, but it’s the home for many Fortune 500 companies. It’s also the home for top law firms, top hedge funds and so on...The job opportunities are more diverse than places like Bay Area and Seattle. In addition, it has U of Chicago, Northwestern and a few other decent universities. Boston is even much more expensive than Chicago. The infrastructure is also nice. It is definitely an underestimated city
Crime?
The crime is much more concentrated in bad areas in Chicago compared to SF, where it seems like there are hoodlums everywhere.
Blame the CA government for basically decriminalization of everything. You call the cops and they essentially tell you tough luck

Chicago is still an old city despite its size. It hasn’t seen much of a boom as other cities.
More and more People are leaving chicago every year. Housing prices keep going down while taxes get higher. All of Chicago’s government are beyond corrupt. It’s no wonder people leave
It’s cheap because ultimately there is little demand for Chicago real estate. Don’t conflate urban areas with being (always) highly sought after and super expensive.
