Can FBers provide any input on what's happening behind the scenes here? They want to interview me in product API design. On the on-site I did regular distributed system design, but it looks like I only "met" the bar according to the recruiter...so shouldn't it be fine?
This is the one where we bring out the flaming zuck tiki totem and you prove your loyalty by running through the gauntlet and getting a swanky new Caesar haircut at end. But first you will know pain friend...prepare yourself.

Probably one of the interviews they didn't get enough signal. Either they missed an important piece for your onsite or the interviewer is borderline. Your offer likely rests on nailing this follow up.
Yea recruiter said I should look to acing this round and all will be good.
A friend of mine was just in the same situation, went back and did a second design interview. Aced it. Holidays hit. Delays happened with the FB hiring committee. Then they called her and said they wanted another full 5 interview round - as if the 2 phone screens 5+1 onsite interviews meant nothing. The original callback was to help decide between sde2 and senior. My friend didn't want to go back again. It's been months since she was in the original interview/leetcode mindset. Would have to ramp up again. Said to send it to the hiring committee for Sde2. They spent 2 more weeks, then came back and rejected her overall. Which was very surprising that they'd waste so much time, effort, and bungle their hiring process so much. Instead of offering sde2 they just reject overall. Luckily she was already joining another fang, but it's ridiculous
