He is Distinguished Engineer and Amazon is big Java shop and outside Blind it is also one of the largest tech company. What would he do at FB? Change his skills from Java to PHP? Also, he's under AWS not Amazon

But here's what you're missing: people at that level don't have the same experience as they rest of us. You imply the work environment at Amazon isn't great for the typical engineer (I don't believe you, but let's roll with it). What does that have to do with what he is doing? He's not sitting on a scrum team building an admin panel for a tiny corner of AWS or A/B testing button colors on the retail site. What would being at Google or FB get him that he doesn't have at Amazon?
AWS is doing much more exciting work than Google, at least in my opinion. He seems to agree.
