Internal websites, employee tools, Office 365, Yammer, Skype, VSTS, Azure Portal, etc. They’re all so BAD. It hurts. I want to stab out my eyeballs anytime I try to do something simple. How is it all so buggy and terribly designed? Why? Aren’t there tens of thousands of engineers? Doesn’t upper management care about quality? Or even just developer productivity??
Most of Microsoft (outside of Bing I guess) still thinks the internet is a fad and that real engineers only write Windows device drivers in C. That affects the kinds of people who they hire and who stick around doing anything online related.
As I observed, some engineers spent more time on how to play politics rather than spending time learning new techniques and distributes systems; it’s like living in a single server era, the best solution often proposed was to reboot machines with no follow up afterwards.
Distributed systems are relatively unimportant for a lions share of Microsofts offerings.
Because IIS sucks.
You answered the question yourself... tens of thousands of engineers, not enough UX designers.
Office 365? What's bad about it?
It’s slow, buggy, freezes, links don’t work, pages hang, UI is clunky at best, functionally is horrible, individual apps like OneNote and Excel are a joke, and it’s just generally painful to use. It makes the Google suite look epic.
People tolerate shitty UX in enterprise software because their employer makes them use it. They also learn how to deal with all the ridiculous bugs because corporations at large are slow to change and the suits paying all the licensing fees don't care about the pain their employees endure using these products.
Give me 1 concrete example ? Also which team are you from and what bad product are you working on. I use Yammer and office 365 and they seem to work fine . Overall I agree about clunky UI
Yammer - the search functionality is basically garbage. Try it. O365 - try to share a link to a sub-portion of a document. Come back in 3 hours.
Because they pay penaut for devs
Add LinkedIn to that list - not sure wtf those ember devs did but it crashes every use
Vendors build all that shit, the fte are running around filling out Perspectives and Connects and playing politics.

Because they still believe in wearing suits to interviews.
If you were good enough to interview at msft you’d know this wasn’t true 🤷♂️
Already interviewed. Try again.
