TL;DR Do you chase more TC because you have financial reasons to or because you think you need to for some superficial reason (Status, maybe?). Poll added. Include other reasons in comments. I recently joined Blind and though it’s only been a couple of days I’m almost at the point where I want to give a 2 week notice for a position which I haven’t even started yet. Lol. Blind’s opened my eyes to the SWE market and I’m grateful for the knowledge and value of this app but I feel like I’m gonna be influenced to spend only 6-12 months max at any company. I wanna be a TC CHASER Why do you “TC chase”? YOE: ~10 TC: 🥜
I chase high TC as my main goal is to retire early. Whether anyone likes it or not, you need to be more than financially stable to have a good retirement in today’s world. That and the freedom that comes with the money is all I care about. The money itself is just a means to an end.
This is it. I don't see the point of working a job that pays me half (after taxes) of what I could be making somewhere else, when really I'd rather not work at all. Of course working at Amazon I realize now that money isn't everything, but any company you join could be a shit show, it's impossible to judge from the outside.
Exactly. A company can, and has replaced me before upon departure and has been business as usual. You gotta look out for yourself. I don’t want to be 60 retiring. I plan to be retired by 45 ideally. And doing the same job for less just sets me up for failure down the road in that aspect. I work to live. I will never live to work and if that’s what a company wants, it’s not a good fit anyways.
I want financial independence but I also don’t want to scrounge pennies till then. So anything that lets me save ~300k a year is okay with me. I’ve hit the point now where I don’t feel the need to tc chase. I’m fine being here for the next 5 years, at which point I can take more risks in my career.
Yeah pretty much what I was dying. I just want the freedom to do whatever I want financially, while still enjoying life now.
If you are not a TC optimizer then blind is not a good place for you.
And that’s what I’ve realized lol. But I love being a SWE and money’s never really been huge driver for me in tech. I’d rather be happy 40-60 hours a week doing something I love in a good work environment than just jumping ship for TC.
Theres a potential to double then triple my TC doing the same work. So why not be smart and make the right moves?
Tc or gtfo
Chasing FIRE
I want to make enough money to gain financial independence and break from wage slavery.
I don't see any TC in this post OP
Money or power. All that matters.
With a strong preference for both
I get it.
