Why is tech company hate on the rise?

May 6, 2018 18 Comments

I just came across this news article where the author repeatedly emanates animosity towards the large US tech companies, without any facts to back anything up.

This is pattern of misguided hate is on the rise, and it’s sad to see respected publishers such as FT also joining in on this bandwagon..

People I’ve spoken to see also hate the pay difference seen in tech vs other industries. They see it as tech people are part of the “elite”. Silly but whatever.

We don’t have 3x the expenses. And even if we did we’d still have 2x net.

To those making $30K, $60K a year is elite...

I just posted this on another thread: There is a lot of resentment towards gentrification, as a lot of artists, teachers, blue collared folks are getting pushed out and replaced by techies. The tech buses plying people from South Bay to SF are considered another eyesore. Also a lot of hipster restaurants are replacing traditional taquerias. Lots of small businesses getting booted as rents go up. So yes, there are pockets of resentment in SF.

I think people in tech are very unaware and not understanding how people outside of the technology world feel, their sense of helplessness in the presence of technology in their lives. They need internet, Wi-Fi, email, Google search to do their jobs but they feel powerless to control how that information is used.

Why do they *need* to control any of those?

Much like I don’t get upset because I can’t control many things in my life I’d like to control.

It’s not tech hate on the rise, it’s people earning a significantly larger amount of money telling others how ‘privileged’ they are.

They are all run by liberals pushing agendas outside tech. People hate them influencing things outside tech.

    1. The perception that tech workers are the elite/rich and negatively changing every city where they are present
    2. The increasingly political stance tech companies take. Google with Damore, Twitter/Facebook/Google openly support BLM, YouTube promoting LGBT agenda on their homepage, etc
    3. The questionable usefulness & security of their products. Is social media actually damaging the country?
