Why mgmt leadership at Amazon carries negative reputation?

Worked there for ~ 3 yrs, and I feel most mgrs (~ 99% of the time) are insecure and ego sensitive. But somehow amazon still beats Google in Cloud and retail business (shopping, smart devices, customer service, etc.) Any thoughts? FYI. I work at LinkedIn. YOE 7. SSE. TC 310K. Bay Area.

They beat Google since they were the first, they are losing ground to Azure as some of their offerings are not customer friendly and wellpolished; managers have a big role in that for sure!

Anecdotally, a lot of companies locally (I’m in the Midwest) are switching to Azure and Google. I know one of the reasons isn’t even technological. They’re afraid of entrusting their data to someone who might end up being the competition.

Microsoft is really pushing for customer trust, maybe one of the reasons I am tolerating the shitty TC, MS under Satya has switched places with old Google!

Interviewed at Amazon. Manager was a jerk. Didn’t even turn on his camera while mine was on. Was not interested at all and told me managers at amazon only writing huge documents all the time 😊 I think he also submitted negative feedback on me, but after the call I had a feeling I don’t want to work there for sure anyways 🤨

Maybe you could turn your camera off too

Don’t judge a banana by its cover.

By it's peel. Although that's a bad analogy lol

Amazon is required to fire 7% of its staff each year because of bad performance. To execute on this, you need different kind of managers who are thick skinned and bulls. They might lack in other aspects but as long as they can drop deadweight and attract new blood through 2X comp than Microsoft, gravy train keeps going.

2x comp? Not really. Please people take into account that unlike other companies once you are in at Amazon there will be no pay rises, bonuses, refreshers or promotions.

Amazon CulStryBro Aug 24, 2019

If you are not that great, then this is true. If you can quickly climb the promo ladder and get TT again, you will do great.
