Saw a guy in Uber promoted to Senior manager within 4years (with a master degree). Perhaps from l3 to l7. Is this guy a genius or it is common in Uber? I don't believe it is possible in Google. In addition, I have a friend got offers from both google and Uber. Google is l3 and Uber is l5. Is Uber title inflated?
Genius or not, it's difficult to believe that someone is able to get required experience and maturity required to be a senior manager so quickly. Assuming this is a manager of managers position - skipping so fast through hoops will bite him sooner than later (environment change, domain change, company change).
I believe some are born to be a good managers/leaders. But I also think it’s more about the personalities, ambitions, visions and maybe connections to be a good leaders while more about management skills and politics playing to be a middle layered manager. Anyway, possible to be a fantastic senior manager at young, but it takes more than that to be promoted within a few years.
Isn't LinkedIn known for promoting fast as well? I saw many folks going from swe to director within 5-6years.
Those are like 2 data points you know
There’s a senior SDE in my org who got promoted from SDE I to senior in under 4 years. He’s gunning for principal in the next 1.5 years, which will be under 7 years. He’s that good, though. Incredible engineer, works hard, nicest guy I’ve ever met, has serious backbone, amazing mentor.
LinkedIn state?
Probably LinkedIn title. Sr mgr is L6 at Uber. I know a few 5a managers (first line managers) who have engineering lead as their LinkedIn title. Manager promos are actually pretty hard at Uber, eng ones are easier.. Google’s promo rate is completely pathetic, Uber’s is not too bad.. I have seen many 3YOE (after BS) get to E5 at FB too, easy to show impact when there’s so much low hanging fruit (especially in fast growing parts like eats). Doesn’t mean the promo bar is low..
Agree with what you said generally. Minor correction - sr mgr is L7
No. L7 is Director. 5a is Manager, 5b is Manager 2, 6 is Sr Manager, 7 is Director.
Of course you can't do it at Google
There are some guys like this at Databricks too. Someone I know graduated undergrad in 2015 and by 2019 they were senior manager. Now that I think about it, Databricks was started in 2013 so it might not be as big a deal as it appears.
I can safely assure you that there is not single senior manager with 4 years of experience. Your friend must be bluffing
Updated screenshot. Let me know what you think
He is 5b i.e. 3 promos. Also he is a DS, DS promos are different from Eng promos.
It's the way to keep engs. We have crazy attrition. Half of infra is senior 2 already lol
Do people just quit a lot or attrition by pip
Just quit
if people quit so much maybe the only option left is to promote those who tolerate?
