Why shouldn't new grads prioritize RTO?

I've seen several posts for new grads choosing between companies.

Change my opinion: apart from huge pay differences, new grads should prioritize physical office presence. The reason is that you can ramp up, learn, and gain institutional knowledge much faster. This has the highest long-term payoff out of any other factor. Thoughts?

  • I agree, it’s easier to learn when you can just drop by someone’s desk ad hoc and watch over their shoulder as they explain things

I mean this is true for any level of career. Sure the benefits to your career of being in-person are highest as a new grad and eventually taper off, but it will pretty much always be beneficial to be in person.

But people care about things outside of career, and that’s where many are seeing benefits of remote work. Everyone has a different equation for deciding what’s best for them, and for many new grads the outside of career benefits still outweigh the career benefits (even though they are high).

Yea I agree with you. The problem is the so called people that they are supposed to learn from don't want to be in the office. Who are they learning from then?

  • If I was fresh out of college and didn’t have kids I would want at least hybrid. I am old and with young kids so now I only want remote or something with like a ten minute commute (aka impossible, so remote it is!).
