Tax+rent cost is highest in all of the US, top few in the world. Rent is ridiculously high, given the quality of housing. Some real estate developers are definitely raking it in with these shit ass quality housing. Software talent is abundant. You are treated more like a commodity. You are more replaceable here in sfbay than anywhere else. People with the same/better talent as you will travel 10,000 miles to arrive at sfbay and replace you. It’s a boring city compared to NYC or even LA. No cultural, things-to-do perks here. Basically drive 6 hours or get on a plane to go anywhere else. So? everyone is more focused day after day on making more money, become less replaceable, working more and more. Got nothing much to do on the weekends any ways, right? Just work. Other than the folks who grew up here or whose parents own some tech company that ipo’d 15 years ago or went to palo alto high school. If this is your home, I understand. But if not and you plan to live here for the longer term, why the fuck do you wanna do that?
You are wrong, I moved out of Bay Area. There is life beyond FAANG, brand employers.
I don’t. 10x happier and have WLB not to mention much better dating scene elsewhere. There’s a reason why girls in the bay areas are called 49ers - 4s behaving like 9s.
what about 69ers?
Yeah girls here really are 49ers. Well what can you do if you are stuck here. There are too many male SWEs here, so the market is on the 49ers' side.
Put in a good 10-20 year here. Sell my house and buy half of some flyover state. Can’t go the other way
4 hrs away from Tahoe and Yosemite, better traffic than LA, moderate climate, living cost offset by higher pay in the Bay Area, probably highest concentration of tech companies and startups
Switching companies is definitely the easiest here. Within 10 mile radius.. many companies I can get into.
Kinda off topic but related to proximity to tech and infra for innovation, within 10 miles radius of Downtown SJ there’s like more than 20 PCB manufacturers, local machine shops, hacking space, and shit tons of meetups. Also VCs and acccelerators
Great weather, lots to do, make so much that I make up for additional taxes and have decent wlb. Lots of opportunities too
Live for 5 to 10 years and then get out of Bay Area.
3-5 yrs for me.
Easy - I was born and raised here, my entire family lives here and I have top tier TC. Always wanted to live in SF as a kid and now I’m living my dream. Every morning I get to see that beautiful vista of Sutro tower over the hills and the shimmer of the sun on the bay, with our skyline framing it all. It’s pretty magical.
Also I think of my CA taxes as paying for the weather and not being stuck in some Trumplandia shithole

Wow long rant. Did you bang on Valentine? For me, the Bay is a place for career growth. I can always move back if I want to.
Move back to where?
Is that important? But for sure it is much cheaper, livable and family-oriented place.
