No condescension intended, Airbnb ranks highly as as a tech company to work for. I was curious why people want to work there. It doesn't seem hard from an engineering standpoint. Is it culture, wlb, money?
I don’t think it is a good time to join either. Stock is already inflated and they struggle to create more businesses.
Lol Uber jealous of a company that is actually cash-flow positive.
I don’t think their IPO if it ever happens would be any better. Let me be wrong.
Airbnb is past its peak. Haven’t heard anything exciting coming from them in a while.
Airbnb is filled with new grads who are good at leetcode. The reason why people choose to work there is the nice TC and prestige. If you want to do real engineering then come to G/FB
So what kind of real engineering are you doing at G?
Gcp?
TC and Wlb
Our food is really good IMO
Not the “best” but second to Dropbox imo. Also actually healthful
Culture, WLB, comp, sure. Or being very interested in the travel space, or our unique payments-related or trust-related challenges. High QPS is only one aspect that makes things interesting, most of the work isn’t substantially different between a company like Lyft or Airbnb.
Our WLB is mediocre. 15 days of PTO sucks.
I really question the assertion that high qps is the only difference. Lyft is a real time marketplace. There is a ton of complexity that comes with optimizing supply and demand in a timely manner, especially across the shared/saver products but also in building new products. Bikes and scooters have a ton of optimization challenges too, and hardware is challenging anyway. L5 (self driving) is another beast altogether Airbnb is relatively simple, and if not for the $, is in the same category as Expedia, TripAdvisor etc. Arguably, those two are more complicated, but I never heard anybody going to those companies for the tech challenges or an interest in the space.

They pay well even compared to other faangs
