This is for T4 with about 5 years of experience. Close to 3 inside the states, 2 outside. I've got an offer from Amazon for TC 220k from with 160k/105k bonus and 96 RSU. My recruiter wanted me to share numbers. Will Google match Amazon's offer compared with cost of living increase in bay area? If they just match these numbers Amazon will still be the better offer given how much cheaper Seattle is.
Yeah the whole cost of living argument is iffy for them. With COL in mind, there's nothing stopping someone earning 100k in a very low COL area to ask for 400-500k in bay area for same quality of life. They definitely won't meet your expectations(or any of ours :p) as to cost of living difference between Seattle and bay area. I would suggest asking them for an offer in Seattle, they will definitely beat Amazon there no question. Negotiating between different locations is always tough. I would say having all of your competing offers in same location would be great leverage.
Most likely they will exceed it if they really want you. If you want more freedom to innovate, Amazon is where you want to be
How is 160base 105 sign and 96 rsu equal to 240k? It’s more like 220k
What's your role and level you are being hired for?
I had a Google TSE and Amazon SDE2 offer, both for 220k, Google offered last and didn't budge on raising TC more than 5%. I had two calls with the Google recruiter and team before I declined.
Google has a lot of people in SEA/KIR so you can see about getting placed there.
Agreed: ask Google for numbers first. Then, will they match? Well, the best way to find out is to ask them. You can find one of those sites that lets you compare cost of living in two different places. Say for example, SF is 40% more expensive than Seattle (just making up numbers) - you can ask your recruiter for a comparable adjustment over amazon’s offer with the site as backup for your claim
I’d live in Seattle. Then again I’m biased since I left BA for Seattle. :)
Ha I’m also biased since I’m moving there soon - first job out of school, NYC and SF are just so unappealing because of price. But the OP wants advice on offer matching, so the OP gets advice on offer matching
You're in a great spot. You have an offer from Amazon already, and you have no need to accept Google if they don't meet your requirements. So figure out what those requirements are, and just ask them. If it's a no, walk away.
Unlikely that anyone is truly compensated for COL. But the best situation is the one you’re in. I’m assuming the Amazon offer is for Seattle. You will instantly get 10% more in your pocket from no state income tax. But the weather is the worst! I cannot emphasize that enough. So anything Google offers you must be at minimum 10% more in base. Where are you in the interview process at Google? They are notoriously slow, which can be quite annoying when you have a bird in the hand as the saying goes.
Ask for google numbers first?
