Does msft really pay this low?
Do you think the supply will ever reach the demand for software engineers and will this cause their TC to fall? Or will HWE switch to SWEs leading to HW TC increasing due to lack of supply.
Yes, but in a limited sense. The same software companies offering massive TCs are now building hardware and offering HW TCs comparable to SW.
Not true at all, even at G. HW is basically a lowballing olympics since theres fewer top employers.
HW TC is a bit lower at Google vs SW, but it is still much much higher than at traditional HW companies. Also, many HW engineers can get SWE job titles at Google. If you get a few top offers as a HW engineer, even Google will give some pretty good offers. I'm actually one of those people at Google now (keeping my MS blind account bc I want that top writer status lmao).
There’s quite a bit demand for hwe
Not really. If swe makes 3 or 4 times as much
Op, do u guys make ur own chips at nasa?
In our lifetime, yes. Probably in the next 10 years
Yeah, I don't it's going happen. The number of top architect/designer positions in hardware are very limited compared to software and filled up already. Also, there isn't much mobility(compared to sw, ofc) and therefore more limited professional growth. When a company is willing to give +300K in TC in a position is because they already know the name of the person they want to poach. I gave up with hw long ago, it was fun, but then you realize where the big bucks live in. Sometimes it feels I wasted my time double majoring.
300K+ TC ? Of course there are many HW folks higher than that ... Just need more yoe.
All hardware is a couple z transforms everything else is software
Apple pays hardware engineers as much as top tier software companies. If you work on crucial iPhone areas it’s not hard to have cash bonuses at 50%+ of your salary along with a few hundred k of rsus. Most mid level hardware engineers at Apple have TCs around 250-350k
No, because hardware will never match ROI of software. HW and SW are similar in NRE costs, but manufacturing/logistics costs eat into HW margins, while SW is infinitely reproducible with very little overhead. Also most hardware is useless without software, so even if demand of HWE goes up, demand for SWE will go up in relation.
It’s all about supply and demand. I would say an order of magnitude of students are picking software over hardware. It’s also much easier for international students to become expert software engineers since you don’t need much capital. While there are more high paying software jobs there’s about to be a huge influx of swe jumping into the job market
Agreed, but so far I haven't seen any indication that supply is outpacing demand.
HW will be automated and all HWE will become SWE by studying Reverse Linked List and LRU Cache on Leetcode.
You think ASIC's can be automated?
Dude might not even know what ASIC is
