As an IC, will choosing to be remote (staying in US) be just as viable for career growth as being in office? Seems a lot of companies are allowing it, including FB, but curious on its impact on growth
You can float around as an IC but impossible to move into management staying remote forever. Best example is : My friend works for a mid size-smaller company. A few of them go in person to the office voluntarily. Management is incentivizing folks who come in with free food every day and bunch of perks. Do you think Joe who works remote from the Bahamas will get faster promotions compare to Dave who goes in (even if 2x-3x a week) and socializes with upper management? The CEO and upper management have been coming in every day because they are more invested in the success of the company
Depends on the company and team. If your company is remote by default and your team is fully distributed or nearly so, you have opportunities. If on the other hand your leadership and manager and half your team is in the same office and youโre remote, your remoteness is really only being tolerated, but youโre less likely to advance. Time will tell whether companies now jumping onto the remote bandwagon will actually establish cultures where remote folks can be effective and can advance.

Depends on what youโre looking to do with your career in the long term. If youโre thinking of staying as an IC for the next 10 years, yes itโs viable(though still not ideal). If youโre looking to move into management, you need to be in-office to keep up with appearances and politics(not saying itโs right, just the reality of things)
