Will remote work be the norm in high-growth companies?

I want to be able to afford a dream home for my family, but it seems just impossible in the Bay area without taking an enormous mortgage. Such a home goes for ~3.5M+ in the Bay, and even with a million down by liquidating almost all of our investments, we’ll still be left with a huge monthly payment for someone starting a family.

On the contrary, if I move to a suburbia like Folsom, I get my dream home now for <2M but I worry that my Engineering Management career will suffer. I have no other issues moving to Folsom except concern about my career. I love the laid back life that has plenty of nice-to-haves like shops, restaurants, malls, hospitals etc around.

My worry about remote work in high-growth companies being discontinued is the only thing stopping me from taking the leap.

Signals I have to make the decision:
- 10-50% of the workforce in hot Bay area companies have been hired remotely.
- FAANG hate all-remote
- My company is fine with remote, but I don’t want to be married to this organization
- 10% pay cut if I move to Folsom
- I want to grow into senior leadership roles. I’ve been a high performer with a healthy work-life balance, and don’t foresee a performance dip.

Looking to get some clarity of thought via the community.
