The end of Backdoor Roth?!
The fundamental problem with the current form of social media is user is not the customer. This is because user is not paying to use the services. Its the advertisers who pay. So the social media is selling user's attention to the advertisers. Now companies like Facebook rely on money generated from advertisements. Unless FB figures out another way to make money, user are at risk of being manipulated by advertises. So if every social media app starts charging users to use the service, are you willing to pay and continue using it? Lets say like 10$ a month and no advertisements for Instagram. #tech #socialmedia #instagram
Heallll no
Isn't this true with all of the internet, tv, magazines, and blind? The ad model is great as the user gets a product or service for free and businesses get to pay to promote a message to them. The user isn't required to do or buy anything but wins when they discover something they were interested in. Ideally the ads should be personal, relevant, and add value but unfortunately that isn't always the case so people think they don't like ads when usually they just don't like bad ads.
Thats a good point! IMO, No software application that can be exploited by advertisers to manipulate users to the extent where it is harmful to them should be allowed to be used for free. Because as we can see in the case of Cambridge Analytica, the application designers and leader not putting user at the centre is the root cause of all the problems.
How many donated to Wikipedia? They were literally begging for $2.
I did. Most of friends did. I donated 50$ this year. I definitely have gained more knowledge through ad free wikipedia. I usually 20$ a year. But after knowing how important it is to have a neutral platform that is not manipulated by a few actors, I doubled the amount I donated. Even if 10% of the users pay that is enough right? And that is how Wikipedia is ad free for so many years.
Many donated to Wiki. i do several times. I also used to pay for WhatsApp and several other platform for ad free experience. How is this question different from say a hulu, kindle, hbo max, youtube etc etc with ad and without ad.
It is different in the sense hulu, kindle, hbo max, youtube do offer a ad free service with a premium. But social media doesn't today. I am pondering if social media should start charging? If so, are people willing to pay?
Communication has always costed money. As long as cost is commensurate to value people will.
Instagram is making more than $10 per user per month bro lol. Facebook is literally printing money from users whether they are bots or not.
Well, thats a problem right? Is it ethical to make a shit load of money at the cost of harming millions of users? No company should be allowed to prioritize profit over user safety. But the sad reality of most companies is that they do prioritize profits over any thing else. I think this is where government should step up and pass laws that cannot be bypassed or have loop holes that will prevent a handful of greedy guys to abuse rest of world to make money! But unfortunately, the law makers themselves are not putting citizen welfare as high priority over protecting the interests of a few big companies.
welcome to the most capitalistic country on earth. If you dont like it, you can always go to Europe or China.
No. I do not use it now when it is free.
Where’s the option which says: “No, the current free option is the best. I want to discover products which I might like based on my previous interactions”
Ok Zuck
lol that was funny, I do sound like a corporate shill but I really don’t mind this. I get shown relevant and great products because Zuck knows what I like 🤷🏻♂️
