I have an offer to join Wipro at Director level D1. I would be very interested in any feedback from people that has worked their. Esp. Around, talent, wlb, career progession, the bonus structure a d whether it pays out, amount of travel etc. Thanks
You moving from Microsoft to Wipro ? Whats the current level and ctc at Microsoft? What's offered at Wipro ?
My level at Microsoft is 65, D1 director is being offered at Wipro. Wipro has no stocks so I would lose a lot of unvested stock. The main reason for considering a move is career progression, which is non-existent at Microsoft. And politics, Microsoft is plagued with politics which has nothing to di with talent.
He might be v- or contractor into Microsoft and moving to another contractor company
I am an FTE, in role for 9yrs
I haven’t worked for Wipro but had resources in my team from Wipro. So my views are based on that experience. 1. Talent : Their business model revolves around maximizing the revenue by paying the employees less. I At junior level I have observed that one month salary being equal or less than one day cost billed to the Client. So you can see how difficult it would be to get top talent and retain them. Of course being in a senior role most likely they can’t bill you. So all your compensation will have to be taken out of the savings that you bring from the team under you. I did see some very good talent paid well too. But that’s no match to some MNCs. Can’t even compare to FAANG. Some say that they like the job security and less pressure in meeting their job demands. They also have a specialized consulting team to deal with complex problems and act as SMEs to help their Wipro team mates when engaged. As a director you should have access to this team. 2. Wlb- Totally depends on you and the team you work with. At times we all tend to work long hours. At some point you will reach that tipping point. So either trade your time for higher compensation or family. Even if you can work long hours and handle stress, is your time away from family worth it, is something only you can answer better for yourself. Coming back to Wipro , I did see them working long hours exceeding 12 hours a day , but when switched off ... you hardly get 3-4 hours of productive work out of them even at their best. Wipro puts this responsibility on the clients most of the time. If asked to improve few solutions offered are ; give a replacement or to pay a higher rate to get better talent. So imagine yourself handling such situations. You seem to have lots of experience. You probably know this better. One thing that comes to my mind is that you probably have become so productive working at Microsoft that the work at Wipro might be completed at less time than few of your peers. That will automatically give you extra time. Also at times expect to act as a delivery manager if the client is not happy with the acting manager and things get escalated. Bonus: I heard senior management are offered stock options along with cash bonus. But expect it to be less generous compared to Microsoft. Travel: if this is something you enjoy, at your level expect to travel a lot. I know someone who travel every month. At the same time, some prefer to restrict it to once a quarter or even less. I worked with one of them for 1.5 years and never got a chance to meet. Everything is via Skype meetings. Most of the times , it would be a demotion for you from Microsoft to Wipro if you are taking similar roles. However if you are jumping from less experienced position and feel positive about others, you can make the switch. You can always go back to Microsoft if you are confident about your skills that it won’t be an uphill battle for you. My experience is probably less than you. But I am learning a lot from here after I joined here few weeks back. So thought of sharing my views to contribute with the limited knowledge I have. All the best to you.
Thank you, this is a very helpful response.
Based on one of my close friend who came into my company from a senior director role from Wipro. It would suck coming from Microsoft, unless and until you are a one with high manipulative personality.
Why would it suck? Can you elaborate more pls?
Well there are a lot of reasons. For starters, it’s the work culture and talent. Starting from bottom up, they tend to hire the cheapest of Indian labor and that comes at the compromise of quality. As you might guess survival then comes down to manipulation, politics, toxicity, etc rather than quality of engineering. No wonder, people tend to stick to this company for years, as they get obsolete in terms of there engineering. The same friend used to say “90% people are not engineers, they are English writers, copy pasting from SO. And percentage is more in Indian service industry”. Another reason is that unlike a product based company, you are actually playing with clients and other people’s more money. It is not like a financial organization where they give it to you and trust you. Rather they boss you. He came down from a VP role and back to a lower role. The reason is that you go through so much abuse and unethical turbulence that is not easy of everyone. Being in a service business in consulting of something in which your associate don’t have expertise comes with a cost. Obviously, if that does not hurt if you are a strong manipulative person and are ready to except the hassles. Considering coming from MSFT, I would assume no.
I wouldn’t recommend going from MSFT to Wipro. I guess you can find decent roles internally at MSFT.
Wow. Microsoft is a pretty respectable company. The best I can say for Wipro is that they don’t suck as much as HCL. If I saw this on a resume it would raise all sorts of red flags.
Interesting perspective although I have been at Microsoft for 9yrs. What raises flags is people being at Microsoft for 2yrs then moving on. This is because you can't normally stay longer than 2yrs before being managed out if you do not perform, this is not the case for me. Microsoft is a great place to work. The problem is moving your career past l65 and it's highly political especially at this level and beyond which is why promotion becomes next to impossible.
None of that makes MSFT->Wipro not a red flag.
Why not move to other product firms ? If interested in Uber, I can help setup an interview. There are lot of product based companies that look for Director levels.
What was your offer? Salary + bonus?
What decision you made that time? Did you join wipro or not. Plz share experience.

May I ask why MSFT->Wipro?
I would guess $$$
Of course you may ask. Career progession and pay is the reason to consider Wipro from Microsoft.
