I'm curious to know if women are paid less than men for the same level/roles in tech.

Please share the following:

Also feel free to comment if you feel underpaid compared to your male counterparts or not or think you are less favored for promos.

  • Following. This is a good post.
I read the pay gap is smaller in tech and actually more wider in core jobs.
    Curious if it’s true.

it’s not necessarily smaller, just less significant

60k vs 80k is very significant

      360k vs 380k…not so much

Google is paying women more.. (like 1.24k more in average) at the lower levels (L3-L4), right after school. Amazon was similar on this.
Gender gap becomes more visible at later stages (after the 30s), when women often take larger career breaks (child bearing).

So, the 'there is a huge pay gap' is mostly a myth.,

Lesbian women, and women that don't have kids, are paid about 96% of of their male counterparts. So, there is a small gap, but it is tiny. (can be attributed to other factors, like how hard to negotiate, etc).

Next time you hear a politician saying; women make 80% of what men do, they are a grade A bs.-ers. They are removing the 'for the same job, work experience, and hours worked' part.

Also, in average men work about 10% longer than women. The average was 38.9hrs/ week for women, vs. 41.2hrs/week for men. Over time that probably adds up (in experience), which could explain that 4% gap between childless women, and men, at ages over 30.

Women do work at home more, in average (errands and such), and also they tend to take care more for their elderly parents in general. So, overall women do work more in general (when you include home work) than men. Maybe, that's why they except their men to earn more. :-)

So, the dynamics are such that no matter what happens, women will always make slightly less than men, unless they start doing less at home.

As an addendum to what you mentioned: women necessarily bear the burden of maternity leave - physically impossible for women not to. But the fact that men are penalized for taking paternity leave, or simply not having it offered, is probably the biggest contributor to the gender pay gap (between the same job, same experience, level etc, lots of jobs are paid less because care work is undervalued and women more typically do care work). Women who want to have children have to take time away from work - men don't and often don't even have the opportunity.

It's also bad for men to not be offered and not take paternity leave. They are missing time with their children and are less close with them.

Also I'm a woman, no kids, no housework (I'm messy) and make as much as my male peers. So it's true. If you do less at home and don't have kids, and go into a highly paid make dominated field, you can make the same amount as men who have children and has their wife do housework for them.

Very much team dependent. But it’s fast paced. Make it, break it, move on. I’ve heard stories where they’d work on something for 3 months & discard cause they found something that’s of better revenue. If I work on something for 3 months & that ends up being discard discarded, it’s a bummer. If it happens more than once, it’s a motivation killer

Oh I agree, I hate it when that happens too and personally it's happened to me at startups so I wouldn't say it's a large company only problem even if it does probably happen more there.

10 years 625K java backend. San Francisco, US. I think I do pretty well company with my teammates since my perf is outstanding.

Get into a higher pay company (Meta, Uber, ...). I used to get about 200K at SAP. Google also doesn't pay very well.
