Those of you who work for a Big 4 or comparable consulting firm, or have recently, what was the work / life balance like? I’m in marketing now, have a non-MBA Masters, ~6 relevant YOE, and want (need) a challenge. I’ve heard decent things about Deloitte, North Highland, and Bersin by Deloitte.
It's bad op. I was at Mercer and it was practice specific but even on a "good" team like mine, it still wasn't great. Frequent months of 60+ hour weeks
Travelling is what kills people. So you really gotta like the kinda work you do.
Unsure for tech focused groups but expect weeks to average at 60, never dip below 50, and frequently hit 75+
Unless you’re one the beach and then it’s 0 😂
All good points, thanks! Looks like it’s back to the drawing board to GTFO marketing.
my wlb isnt bad by consulting standards.
Worklife balance really sucks in consulting, but also depends on the project that you working on and your leadership
Work IS life! what you mean dawg?
I used to travel and complained about wlb. But not anymore as my client is local and don't need to clock extra hours
Friend worked at BCG as senior associate. WLB was very bad for him - he quit in a year.
Hmm good to know, thanks! I almost question if it’s worth doing for a year or two just to move on / up.
WLB will be messed up in most consulting firms until you hit partner level which is roughly 15 years of work 🤷♂️ The friend I was talking about quit not only BCG but consulting in general and now works at a startup. Startups have bad WLB too but the fact that he moved there goes to show how bad consulting firms have it.
