I am a Mobile app developer with almost 8 yoe and currently working in Finance industry. I am thinking of starting to look for other opportunities but for me work-life balance is very important. So, with that in mind, is it as bad at Amazon as they say? I am in Austin, Texas and heard they are expanding aggressively here.
There is WORK no LIFE. YMMV.
Its all org and team dependent. I can WFH/remote whenever, have minimal travel as far as proserve SAs are concerned, and are expected to manage your own time so its really your own fault/decision if you have to work outside of normal business hours unless something unforseen comes up with the project you're on. No on call and no tickets. But YMMV especially if you're a dev unfortunately.
Same ^. Is it as bad as this app makes you think? Absolutely not. Are there teams that might have you wanting to rip your hair out? Yes. Amazon has 500k employees, not everyone is going to be happy and it’s usually the unhappy, low performing employees who come on here and complain

I'm an SDE2 and even though we get tickets and we have oncall I work at most 40 hours per week and can WFH whenever I want. It's all about setting expectations and knowing how to manage your tasks. Can't say that it's the same for every team/org since I only have my experience.
It’s probably worse on average than the defensive Amazon employees on here are admitting to themselves and better than what than the clueless outsiders are piling on about. If it were truly that bad the job would have lost its prestige to a greater degree by now.
If you want WLB don’t join this company. It’s a trade off your soul for cash. Is it worth it?
What do you mean be “bad” WLB at Amazon? 10-hour days, 12-hour days? 20-hour days? Are you SWEs, DevOps, etc. or NonTech? Do SWEs have to worse vs. NonTech (marketing, HR, creative, training, etc.) I’m trying to quantify what “bad WLB at Amazon” means.
