hello guys, I am moving to Seattle (SDE) soon from other state. i am looking for studio mainly, if 1bed is not really higher that much, i may consider as well. i did research: - live in downtown: closer, higher rent, more homeless - live in UW area: 30mins bus, little cheaper, more safe, young environment(?) my ideal budget is: <= $1.5k for studio or $1.7k for 1bed. i don’t do bar/club or anything. 25 y/o please give me some advices and good place to live. thank you. TC: 100k
I'd say live closer. You can get an apartment in your price range in SLU or Capitol Hill. Being able to walk to work is well worth it, imo. Seattle is a safe city in general. Downtown, SLU, and Capitol Hill are all pretty young.
I see. But most studio in SLU = 1.8k or so. Saving $3.5k/year is worth it, don’t you think?
Only if you enjoy the neighborhood and the apartment. Being unhappy for a year for 3.5k is a steep price. Also, not sure if 3.5k/year is worth 1+ hour commute per day which is 365 awake hours per year / 16 awake hours per day = 22 awake days per year lost which is an entire month not counting weekends. On month 13 you’ll have that 3.5k saved, but you could have used 365 hours to do something better than commute.
What’s your age? Why not Capitol Hill?
I feel like UW is not safer. Just google “The Ave” UW crimes.
Don’t move to U district. It’s a whole mess and the college life in the area won’t be fun for you if you don’t party.
Would you recommend downtown then?
If there is one area in Seattle I feel safe going alone even after midnight it's UW. UW is like mini-Manhattan in Seattle, everything open really late. But don't live in the prime areas of UW they can get very noisy. Try anything between UW and Wallingford, some good places there.
Someone above said UW is not safe :( kinda mixed reviews.
Downtown has lots of homeless population and doesn't have a great atmosphere, try queen Anne, Westlake, capitol hill, fremont or ballard
I will look into these. Thanks a lot 👍
All good suggestions. Each neighborhood had a unique vibe. Visit the neighborhoods and see what you think. Ballard is unique because it has everything you need in one place - diverse restaurants, hospital, bakery etc - you never need to leave the area except to go to work. Several new large apartment buildings recently opened in ballard. Some homeless in Ballard, but concentrated around the Ballard commons park.
Life advice: stay away from udistrict
Udistrict is ghetto. The most run-down neighborhood in Seattle. I saw a rat run across the floor in a restaurant and the staffed chased it away with a broom like they do it all the time.
I lived in the u district for years, loved it. Preferred it to many other neighborhoods I’d lived in, including Capitol Hill and SLU. “There are homeless there” !== dangerous. Crime is typical for any part of Seattle that isn’t boring/suburban and 100% white single-family residences. It’s definitely a cheaper neighborhood with a lot of amenities, but no-frills. Good buses from certain areas to other places downtown, for example, express from 45th to Amazon is like 15-20 minutes. Some are seasonally crowded and annoying though, depending on where you’re going and when (70 during internships for a month or so). It’s one of the few neighborhoods where you can eat out every day on a budget. $8 Thai, $7 teriyaki, bubble tea, Chinese bakeries, etc. Definitely avoid downtown. There is nothing positive about living downtown south of SLU. Would say I know very little about your preferences and situation (are you working for t-mobile in Bellevue?) - don’t really know if I can say more to answer your question. I wouldn’t live there and commute to Bellevue or Redmond.
I feel like downtown is ok between SLU and up until about 6th Avenue (near spheres)

idk if i would recommend either area for a young college grad. have you considered neighborhoods like fremont/ballard or wallingford? i know they tend to have fewer apartment options but are better for young people id say
Thanks for your info. I have not looked at those areas yet. I only looked at downtown and UW. Is there any apt with affordable price there if you know?
Check for Vive Apartments in Ballard.. Decent apt, affordable, easily commutable to downtown
