Its decision time on 350k TC bay area VS 175k NC/TX . I value more family life and 9am-5pm jobs than sleeping in company developing something. Whats your advice for happy life in usa. Also do you think the work life balance in google amazon often hits family life???i dont care professional growth as long as i am happy personally.
It depends entirely on the team. You really should ask during the interview process about WLB and team turnover rate. It only takes one manager to create a slave driver micro-culture in a company and as long as they are delivering the higher ups will look the other way.
I agree with you 50% of the time.i feel like Its more than manager in product based.Reason: employee-manager-managers manager are in a race for promotions which makes them work more than what they are compensated. Everyone will run in this loop because of peoples hunger for growth.
Unfortunately many have not gained insight into what truly makes them and others around them happy. I have burned out and I have flamed out. Now...I work to better myself, try to work on interesting things at work and outside of work, and provide high quality service to everyone that I interact with. Everything else is just noise to be sensed, understood and ignored.
Join Cisco and you get paid not to work
get laid off before people start working
You should start working. You’re the reason our company has a bad rep compared to FANG companies. Why would you waste your life not doing anything? If you’re not happy, go to a different company or pursue something personally fulfilling
Life will be easier in NC/TX. You can get a big house etc... less traffic and less financial pressure. That being said FANG might be a good career builder and if you do well your comp may skyrocket.
Right said. Life will be so much easier in smaller cities. Bay area is a rat race but fang companies do give a boost to your career. I heard Microsoft offers a good work life balance and is also a good name to have on the resume. Avoid Amazon if you don't want long working hours. But again, people from those companies can offer better advice.
Let me first say that I do think Amazon's work culture is unhealthy from some perspective. However, I agree with one thing that Jeff Bezos says that I have personally experienced first hand myself in my career. I don't think it's just propaganda. He likes to call wlb "work life harmony" instead. And he explains that if you are not engaged at your work, it can actually be more detrimental to your overall life happiness than if you were (even affect your family relationship, etc.). In essence, work life harmony means that your work and life work together to make you a happy person. So, becareful what you wish for.
Of course he would say that. It’s easy to be exploited as a salaried employee with vesting RSUs, otherwise we’d be paid hourly like the FC workers and would expect payment for all of the work harmony we sing outside of the office.
Amazon will eat you alive if you don’t set boundaries. Honesty, I think most companies wouldn’t say no to you working more hours and over contributing. Don’t set yourself up for failure.
175k in Texas is like 400k in bay area.
Wat about NC?
Similar to texas
Bay Area is a competitive market meant for people who enjoy the thrill of innovation. You should be willing to give it 75% of your attention. That's time and energy away from your family. If you are a family person who wants to see your kids grow up and have a lot of family time then the Bay area is not the logical choice. You are much much better off being in NC/TX. If you want both: work and family then some people choose to come here. A lot of those people are enjoying neither.
Faang engineering roles are demanding irrespective of location they just have a bigger presence into bay. It depends on how your long term goals are both from a career and financial stand point. Think long term and see the pros and cons of both decisions. Staying at fang will let you build a better future financially and from a career standpoint. Once you have built that foundation you can keep building on that from outside of faang even outside Bay Area. An example would be 1mil in home equity 1 mil in combined company stock and 401k and 200-300k in 529s once I hit these numbers I will seriously consider slowing down. If you a diligent with money it should not take more than decade of working in faang to arrive at these numbers. A decade in faang also puts you at a great place in your career.
How old are you?
just two cents, you will never be happy anywhere if you can't set boundaries. if your starting salary is good and tour work product is good then don't be afraid to make management unhappy.

Not sure about FAANG... But heard a lot about work life balance at Intuit (another product company) being extremely good. In fact one of my friends admitted the MV office to become a ghost town by 5pm.
Ghost town ..happy to hear this . I will add intuit to my happy list. will they open Their laptops only at 8am the next day after leaving the office?
More like 9am....
