I am currently an Engineering Manager at Workday. I got an offer from PaloAlto Networks for EM role in the Prisma team which is very different than their traditional Firewall business. TC offered isn't much different than what I am making here ~$350k TTC. PANW wasn't able to beat my current TC but after negotiating they were able to barely match that for EM role. However TC isn't a big deal breaker for me. I really liked what I heard about the company, product, and the team I met during the interview. I want to hear from you all if making a move is worth it ? - It seems like Prisma product and technology is more exciting than Workday but I could be wrong. - The other important unknown to me is the culture and WLB. I really love the culture and WLB here. Wondering how the culture and wlb is there at PANW ? - Would PANW look better than Workday on the resume ? - Lastly how are the refreshes at PANW. At Workday we don't have bonus but the refreshes are big and pretty much guaranteed. Thank you Blind !
Don’t join PANW. Their turnaround story is faltering with the ex-googler CEO. Workday looks 10x good on your resume. Btw shouldn’t you try for tier 1 companies as upgrade? Why even consider a tier 5 company like PANW?
The level of animosity sounds like an ex-employee who got burned? But I’m guessing this is one of those blind prestige trolls. I agree with you that the ceo sucks, but PAN on a whole’s pretty good. A lot of ex-fang folks work here and a few people I know even had PAN beat their fang offers. I’m actually on my way out of here, but it definitely has looked good on the resume, stfu with that tier stuff.
Haven’t been remotely associated with PANW other than making good money on their stock in 2018. Use of foul language just shows your upbringing so please don’t stoop down. Ultimately PANW and any other company is part of a larger class system in tech world. That’s reality.
If you’re in trivalley why even entertain it?
Coast your manager role at workday until it burns down (2-4 years)
I’ll answer each one of your points (note I’m on my way out though): - Prisma’s actually pretty cool, you’re likely to learn a lot working on it. - WLB really depends on the team, but on a whole, I’d say the culture’s really not that good... - On my job search, PAN has actually looked great, I have known a good deal of ex-fang guys here as well. But I really don’t know how it would compare to Workday and think it might be an apples and oranges thing to do. Realize that this is a completely different industry. And as much as blind likes doing it, comparing roles and experience is probably more important than comparing companies... - Refreshers exist, but don’t expect the world there. Honestly OP, you can definitely get more for an EM at PAN. But the levels at PAN are not standard like Workday so YMMV. All that being said, personally I wouldn’t leave a role for another unless you get more money.
Get the hell out of Workday before you are laid off or managed out!
These kinds of scare tactics aren't useful, helpful, or prudent.
@RHki38, there's been a recent surge of PIPs handed out to Workmates by surprise. This is Workday's true culture at their best! Looks like my "scare tactics" was really useful, helpful, and prudent. Hope it convinced OP to move on from this "fake" good place to work.
PANW stock is really low these days which could be a good time to get in. I'm confident about long term financial position. If you're concerned with WLB and culture then don't do it. It's a hard time to join the company...very hectic and stressful right now. Check out glassdoor.
I am surprised so many PANW guy describes PANW like a FLAG company. It is not even close. You guys health insurance and 401k is almost worst in Bay Area
It’s only up there because of pay and how the stock did. I assume that’s what attracted many of the people I knew. Everything else needs improvement and it’s probably the most comparable to amazon. On an individual level, it really depends on your role, etc more than ‘tiers’ really.
Thank you Blind for the help in deciding ! I have been getting DMs on my decision so putting the details here. PANW's Prisma is exciting and upcoming product. PANW tech seems to be very competitive. Also felt the team at PANW was top notch. Overall I felt I would be learning more at PANW than at Workday. I decided to stay at Workday mostly because of WLB benefits and higher pay. PANW pay was low and surprised they weren't able to match about $380k after my annual Workday refresh. Also PANW recruiter seemed to indicate annual refreshes aren't guaranteed at PANW which would be a significant paycut if I don't get one for a year. So the reason to switch would be to work on something more exciting and better tech than Workday. But with COVID, lower pay, and above warnings about wlb, I decided to stick with Workday. Hope to explore PANW again in the future
That’s a good choice you made again as PANW will never be able to match WDAY overall TC. Team, tech stack, wlb etc comes later. Good luck.
Back at it again huh lol
You should be happy that I helped someone. This poster’s experience was in line with my predictions earlier in this thread many weeks ago. Plus Dublin Pleasanton Area is a very nice place to raise family.
Panw is political company people has good opinion about workday
