I’ve been in engineering for about 6 years and I’ve yet to work with a effective PM that was data driven and actually helped things move quicker. Has anyone worked with a good PM? On the contrary has someone worked without a PM and it was effective?

At FB infra PMs are banned if I'm not mistaken. TPMs are allowed.

Awesome still curious on working with a PM that was actually data driven and got how to do product engineering. Haha

    • That makes sense for a team that’s infrastructure based, any product team should have a good PM or the product won’t have direction.

PMs don't necessarily need to be data driven or increase velocity. Product is successful = they are successful. You may have worked for a great PM and not known it

The role is by nature complicated: as a PM your job is to fill the cracks, and keep the team focused on the highest value targets. Over time the job has been loaded of a lot of shit that has been brought over by people moving in like product owner work, design, etc... In reality the place for a good PM should be mostly outside of the building and not in the "scrum" all the time. If you have a good PM you'll know because they are 'the ones that saved you three months of engineering work by saying "don't sorry about x, nobody needs it anyways" and was right. They are the folks that spotted a bad corner case in how the user database was modeled that didn't fit the market you're selling into and said something about it before it was too late. They are the ones that after talking to the team and the business bought you time to address that pesky technical debt that slowed your team down and made everyone faster as a result.

If you have experienced anything similar to those examples then you worked with a good PM.
