For those who know me, I have a huge chip
on my shoulder against Microsoft. Had some really terrible experiences working for/with them and the tools always seemed unreliable and slow to update.

Yada Yada

I have started to come around to the idea maybe its not so bad? Seems have been taking off again and I am becoming more interested. Any Microsoft employees care to share what its like working there?

Little good, little bad preferred.

  • I love working at MSFT. The problem is that a lot of people on my group do and they don’t do shit. It’s easy to be lazy and complacent. If you get a bad manager, mobility can also be an issue. I work on more the creative side. There’s one dude I work with that went 8 years without a promotion. Sure he was willing to stay while that was happening. But he’s a great contributor. I love my job, but during my interview one person said “this is where creatives go to retire” That’s definitely true.

  • People come in around noon and leave at 4pm. If you broke down our salary to hourly that is pretty good. The trick is to get on a team with lots of 40+ people. Since nobody gets natural promos anymore based on merit, motivation levels very low. You need to be DI or external hire now.

    • BS. Just because you're lazy and don't work and rightly so don't get promos, doesn't mean they're going to others without merit. Most promos go to guys since we're a majority male workforce, duh.

My last team was 8-6 in the office, and 6-9 online. (Which was excessive no doubt)

Don’t be lazy and don’t let your team mates be lazy.

I’ll get back to MSFT once my mortgage is paid off and college fund for kids is full. Internal mobility sucks and your manager owns your career, but if you want great WLB and little stress - that’s the place.

There are 100k employees there. They can’t be all bad.

I have great relationships and memories of MS.

I’d go back if the right team called.

  • Find a good team but be cautious if you are a minority. Plenty of racist managers, favoritism, nepotism and HR will allow this to occur without intervention!
