I am currently in nyc. I have a job offer in redwood city. The money is decent, and I think I can afford to pay ~5k in rent per month. My wife and I prefer living in urban area. I was wondering - does it make sense to live in SF and commute to work? Or is the commute going to be soul shattering? If SF is too far, is there a nearby city we can live in, which is not as barren as redwood City? Oracle TC: 150K YoE: 7
Soul crushing don’t do SF. Also it’s much more dirty than NYC. Was in your shoes a few years ago.
It'll be fine. Take the bullet caltrain you'll get there in like 20 min and it won't be that crowded because of opposite direction.
150k TC isn’t enough
I would recommend San Mateo. It’s going to a bit more expensive than RWC but it has probably the best downtown area in the peninsula. It’ll be close to work for the weekdays but also close to SF for fridays/weekends (the limited train stops in SM). There’s a really good asian food scene in SM but a decent selection of other cuisines as well. You’ll almost never see homeless/undesirable people on the streets and people are generally friendly.
Thank you very much for the suggestion 😊
150k and 5k in rent? Hopefully you have a second income. Either way, SF is a far inferior city to NYC, I know from personal experience
You need to up your reading skills bro. I didn't say I am renting 5k apartment with 150k TC.
Maybe you need to write clearer homme. Most people clarify as to what their new TC is or which company they are joining or something to that effect. Anyways to your original question, I don’t think it’s worth living in SF and commuting; definitely not for 5k. That’s my opinion but obviously you do you
Redwood city hands down has one of the best downtown scene in Bay area. It doesn't make sense to travel from SF. Also note that many times Caltrain has huge delays due to accidents.
If having a NYC lifestyle is important to you then you should probably stay in NYC.
You should be able to rent in Burlingame in under 5K rent. Downtown is nice and Caltrain can take you basically anywhere also SFO is closer in case you need to travel out of town
SF is too far. You can rent apartment in Foster City, San Mateo. Apartment for 1 bedroom costs around $2,900 -3000 per month.

If you take caltrain it might be borderline ok. You’re looking at about an hour each way on average. Even SF isn’t a proper city compared to nyc, don’t consider anywhere else in the area.
As a personal anectode, after doing this for 4 years I’m calling it quits and am moving to nyc. The grind isn’t worth it.
I am not too keen to leave nyc either, but it so happens that the offer more than doubles my current salary. I haven't managed to get an offer anywhere near that in nyc.
