I've often heard stories from friends of people leaving their BB IBD analyst roles and landing associate offers at TPG, Blackstone, Warburg Pincus etc. Given that these are some high quality exits, I'm curious about the flip side: what are the worst analyst exits you've seen? #finance #buyside #exitopps
One of my work buddies shifted over to a corporate role with a client (small company) that comped pretty well then got fired after five months or so... only a year at my IB
Had a guy quit bec he had interviews lined up at like 3-4 too shops. Ended up not getting any of them and honestly don’t think he has a job a year later
Okay that’s just plain stupidity. We’re they not very bright to begin with?...
Technical guy just really lacking in EQ so basically got pushed out and was unsuccessful going elsewhere / didn’t have good references to rely on
Know someone who left jpm ibd to become a painter
Wow I respect that so much. Do you know how gutsy you have to be to hop off the well-worn path to a millions to pursue your passion? Good for him/her
Know of a similar person leaving IB and going back to school (graphic design) to pursue his passion. He's doing freelance work now mostly but seems happy.
Know someone who left to join an unknown tiny vape company. Turned out to be Juul several years later. Who knows how he’s doing now though.
This is a good one
Had a college friend move to biz dev at NJOY. Must be weird trying to outmarket other companies when you’re selling addictive products
You could argue the worst analyst exit is to stay on as an Associate hahaha.........
Hahaha
As you get promoted higher in IB, you realize that everyone who sticks around are only the dregs who couldn't get a better offer elsewhere. Talent in IB leaves. Mediocrity floats up.
😣
So what’s the pay, and how did you get there?
Knew this guy who left a private equity role and became a forest fire fighter. Never did get to reconnect with him, but from his pictures of him dangling out of a helicopter, and his pictures Kayaking through water ways and river streams, I do think he's much happier now.
This is an interesting one!

Happened in securities, not IBD. Guy stormed out of comp talk. He refused to talk to manager and didn't show up at work.
Ouch. Where did he go after this?
No idea. I think be burned his reputation
