Worth spending 1k on canada goose?

Is it worth spending 1K on canada goose to beat the midwest cold weather? Or North face/ Eddie bauer would suffice (half the price and not a hiker)?

No need to spend that much on a “trendy coat.” North Face/EB are both fine for midwestern winters.

Lived in Norway for half my life (similar climate), and we've been fine without the Canada Goose

no. also many (most?) of their coats have real fur, which you should look into - it’s very cruel.

The down used for insulation is also cruel, but it’s harder to avoid down than it is to avoid fur. However, I suggest you get a coat with Primaloft or another form of insultion - Patagonia, Eddie Bauer etc all have non-down options.

Very good point. I recall people with them thinking the fur was faux. Also, the animals are caught alive with traps that are illegal in many parts of the world.

You don't invest on a coat you spend

Sage wisdom. Never use the word “invest” if there is zero chance that you will ever sell the item for more than you paid. That’s the only definition of investment. Everything else is just spending.

Waste of money. Just get a good mountain jacket and invest in proper socks (wool) and waterproof shoes and you’ll be alright

I don’t regret buying one. I did get a second hand (unused) one due to not wanting to proactively support animal cruelty / price. A friend of mine decided to go cheaper and get the north face and it’s falling apart after 3 winters in NYC so she just bought a Canada goose. Of course some of it is the brand, but it is genuinely a high end coat with great features. Make sure and get the right level for your typical temperature. Good luck!

Btw north face is not cheap at all. Their heavyweights will cost around 500 bucks which is not cheap by any measure. I see eddie bauer parkas are expendable but they have sale coming holiday season which might bring down the cost around 250 bucks. North face and Patagonia rarely go on sale so either of them will cost around 500 for a heavyweight parka.

Agreed. Not cheap. But cheaper compared to Canada goose

Lived in igloos all of my life and just put on some deer skin that cost $10.. it is not worth killing the Canadian goose population for a jacket.

For the high-end gear you're paying for warmth-to-weight ratio. Since weight isn't an issue, Eddie Bauer, LL Bean, and the like are more than adequate. Or even department store sale racks for that matter.

Definitely not. Some good layering at like $150 or $200 max coat will be fine
