Living in Dallas with family of 3 and a dog. TC 200k YOE 4yrs Current level: Staff SDE I’m considering if it would be worth it to move to bay area and switch to a big name company, targeting TC 400k, but most companies only offer 200k in cash, which might not be enough for house mortgage right? BTW my wife has a decent job as well, but not tech, potential TC 100-150k in bay area. Thoughts? What level and TC should I be looking for when job hunting?
You are doing great in Dallas. Don’t do it
I wouldn’t buy right away. I’d rent first (and maybe second and third).
If you like oppressive politics and agenda, sky high taxes, diversity forced down your throat, pot holes and bums, and homes you can’t afford, then by all means pack up your car and head out here
+1 for politics
dont buy a house here. rent. If you and your wife can hit 500k TC. Thats a move worth considering, Bay area outside of sf isn't that bad.
The commute is tho
highly depends on where you live and work. 500k combined TC will mean they have the ability to rent close to work
I doubt you will get 400k with 4yoe
Have you considered if you can increase your pay in Austin? I think there are some well known tech companies there, possible you could increase to like 250k+ by interviewing there, which might make the math to move to the Bay Area harder to justify.
I don't think the increase in salary would offset the increase in COL. Austin is slightly more expensive than DFW so I don't think a slightly higher salary would warrant the move.
Family of 3 and a dog - guessing you would be looking at 2500 sq ft and 1/8 of an acre? Prob going to run you over $2M if you want to be near work.
How does the dog feel about moving to Bay area? On a serious note, 200k in Dallas == 600k in Bay area.
Depends on my commute time😂
how can this be an accurate conversion? Bay area housing may be 3x Dallas but not everything is 3x as expensive...
Ill be the naysayers and say: do it. Not everything in life is about the biggest house or fanciest car. If you can sacrifice some of those niceties and you’re dreaming about SF then take the plunge
yeah but life also isn’t about the big mortgage in Bay area that keeps you at the company you hate/makes you work overtime just because you need to keep that money flow, then problems with schools, high taxes etc
Don’t do it.
