I'm legitimately considering applying for a Full Stack Engineer role at for a popular political candidate (Sanders, but not the point of the post - let's avoid political discussion please), but I know that it's very likely a temporary position (~9 months) and that after the election I'll have to hunt for another job. How would this look to any Big N company? I currently have ~1.5 YoE/TC# 160K doing high level work and I'm on track for promotion (L3 -> L4) in April.
Some may hold it against you, but generally a job is a job. You’re writing code, not speeches. If you add it to your resume later, just be mostly vague.
Eng at Qualtrics is my first job out of uni, would a 9 month gap look poor to recruiters? Or would you just list it as “Political Campaign”?
9 month gap looks bad. So does working at a less selective org with low TC. You’re going to need a way to explain why you were there and expressing your enthusiasm for the candidate’s politics might be really out of place depending on where you’re interviewing next.
I was going to hop on yang gang's team myself awhile back. I couldn't take the pay cut so I didn't, especially with his slim chance to win didnt help either..
Yeah, the pay cut is the hardest part. TC for the position is $85K according to the posting 😭
Yeah, I just wanted to help out the candidate as much as possible and see how far he will go, he definitely went farther than I expected though. I hope you make the right choice, gl!
Yes
Why not just write “Political Campaign” on your resume? No recruiter or HM would be foolish enough to ask you to elaborate further
I wouldn’t hire anyone who mentioned the Sanders or Trump campaigns on their resume. Because I’d prefer if you didn’t mention any candidate.

Damn, the responses here are ridiculous. FANG and fang-adjacent companies love a good story. You just need to spin this, without mentioning the candidate, to your favor. Apple for example has a track record of hiring people from non-traditional backgrounds. You should absolutely do it if you can afford the huge pay cut you’re about to take. It will make you stand out to recruiters and hiring managers at every place you apply to after the election. I don’t see a downside if you’re passionate about this work and if you can spin it after it’s over. Also, Bernie is not a controversial choice in tech circles.
I really doubt it would be held against you. It may be a good idea to list it as Software Engineer for 2020 Presidential Candidate. Many people may even find this interesting. I doubt it will set your career back much, though your short-term TC will obviously suffer.
Do it! It will be a good topic to talk about on your resume. Remember big companies want a story about yourself to promote their diversity
