i interviewed at a series A startup last week (non dev role). Had what i felt was a horrible interview with the skip level mngr. He went line by line on my resume critiquing and even at a few times suggested he didn’t believe me about impact i’ve had. He interrupted me and made jokes about my work history. Generally a horrible vibe but hes a kiddo and this is his third job out of grad school and he’s a c-level. i cant tell how much influence he actually has. i was almost shocked when i got the offer. it was the manager who invited me back for round 2, founder who extended the offer to me and recruiter who is answering my questions. i liked all other parts of the startup and the job (including the founder and other teammates) but i’m leaving my current job because of a boss who enjoys finding peoples insecurities and pointing them out and dont want to start new just to have a skip level just like that. Would it be ridiculous to ask for another interview with this guy before deciding? i want to get a 30 min coffee with him and ask him about his vision, and to feel it out a bit more and see if he was just having a bad day. I cant tell if that’d be really weird to ask for, but right now my answer is no. Love to hear any opinions.
It would be unusual but not in a bad way. Nothing to lose.
Nothing to lose esp if you are currently a “no”
At a startup, nothing is weird.
At my previous two positions iv done this exact thing. After they extend the offer I ask for one more interview with a specific person. I feel like it gives me more negotiation power and better idea about the role. Even did it with G after their crazy long process lol
What reason did you give for it? In this case, I want to tell if this potential skip will be total jerk to work for. Never done this lol
"I'd like to come for another onsite and meet with a few of the senior devs to get an idea of the pace at this lab" - at a smaller company, 40 people in building. They didn't mind "In my previous interview with X we didnt have time to talk about the specific tech stack I'll be dealing with so Id like to have a quick chat with him again" Literally anything that's not negative
I did it with Amazon. Before accepting the offer, I asked to speak with the hiring manager and an engineer on the team first. Not weird.
FB, Google, etc and several start ups invited me back post offer to meet with skip level types to talk about the company more as part of their sell. I have done the same for people we made offers at previous jobs. It's pretty standard and reasonable. That said, the behavior of the interviewer sounds pretty unprofessional, regardless of "having a bad day" or not. Even if they were, how many bad days do they have?

Totally valid. I specifically asked for a one on one extra interview with my manager before I was willing to talk compensation numbers
But I can’t tell the actual structure. I see you’re at Cisco, a more mature company. I feel like because everyone is doing everything in startup mode, it’d be pretty clear our interview didn’t go well and maybe that would reflect poorly on me?
Didn't you say they already extended the offer? They're not going to go back on it because you want to talk to someone more. Just say something like "offer X is interesting but I'd like to talk to person Y more to get a better idea of their vision/whatever corporate jargon". If you're savvy this can put you in a stronger negotiating position too if you're able to dig up circumstances you're able to leverage, e.g. some senior dev left 6 months ago so there's a lot of pressure to get someone new in. Ask questions and dig
