Would you hire uber engineers?

Jun 13, 2017 19 Comments

With all the bad pr I'm wondering if the bad perception extends to IC engineers. I have several good friends at uber who really enjoy their jobs and have fun and interesting technical work. I'm considering applying but worried about long term impact on resume.

People on here seem to believe that Uber engineers are somehow tainted but in the real world it seems to be the opposite. I've never had more recruiters reach out to me than in the past 3 months.

Multiple recruiters from your standard Google/MS/FB/Amazon and pretty much every startup in SF (there are a lot more startups here than I thought). I went from like 10 daily views on LinkedIn to 50+ in the last week.

Can confirm this. I've been seeing way more interest from recruiters in the past few weeks than before. It's a mistake to assume that all engineers at Uber are shady given the recent events. From my experience, it's not much different from other companies I've worked at. You have a small number of jerks and assholes but the great majority are genuinely good people who are here to work on interesting and challenging problems. We are not married to Uber which is why you are seeing some people leave to work on interesting problems somewhere else. Excluding someone just because they worked at Uber is a huge mistake. The hiring bar here is pretty high so you would just be missing out on pretty talented individuals.

    • Recruiters are reaching out to you because they assume the conversion rate is higher because they assume you're unhappier and more likely to jump. Recruiters != hiring managers.

  • I will but clearly they will be scrutinized for culture - I already rejected 2 last week :)

    • 1 was for tech skills - this is a person who joined early 2015 ( won't say which group - but from infra) , other from growth - some more in pipeline . The growth one was too arrogant and would have spoilt the team . However one good thing is that now atleast I believe why they are leaving . In 2016 I would have been very skeptical about hiring someone - but now I am less skeptical as it's easy to explain why you are leaving - actually no need to explain too. Let's see I am keeping my mind open and interviews are unbiased - so if someone is good and performed well , I will not reject just because this person is from Uber .

    • Why is that? I thought they are going through a culture change.

    • Haha culture change ? If you believe that then you are foolish. So if I find some good engineer who worked in good companies in past move to Uber now - I will likely have a hard time hiring that person as opposed to someone who was there before 2017. It's like a red mark to me.

  • We've hired a couple recently, although we do have a dedicated Values interview so they'll have had to pass that.

    • Can you tell me how do you do that test :) be more cautious with those who liked Uber and worked more than 6 months .
      Jun 14, 2017
    • We have 5 company values (e.g. Don't Fk the Customer, Play as a Team...) and we have trained Values interviewers who ask behavioral and situational questions around each value. They put evidence/examples down and then score each value out of 5 based on that evidence.

Irrespective of how well someone does in the tech, if you fail the Values interview you will not be hired.

People talking bullshit here are not hiring managers. If a hiring manager is willing to reject candidates based on newspaper articles about Uber in general, I wouldn't want to work under that manager anyway
