Poll provided.

Major differences in benefits (Amzn employees feel free to correct in comments):
- Microsoft has better health insurance coverage and lower maximum out of pocket payments. Around $3k less for a family.
- Amazon requires employees to pay a premium for health insurance (around $400 a month for families) while it's free at Microsoft. That's $5k a year.
- Microsoft contributes $9750 to 401(K), $2500 to HSA and provides $800 for buying fitness equipment. Amazon has neither (there's a 401K match but it's shit, effectively 1k a year vests).
- Microsoft's ESPP provides an extra $2500 each year.
- Microsoft's mega backdoor Roth contributions are far larger ($25k more). My calculated impact of this is around $7k a year.
- There's other smaller perks I'll skip here. I'll also skip lifestyle improvements and better work-life balance.

Total monetary impact of benefits: $28k per year.

I moved from L61 to L5 and got a huge pay bump and the work was infinitely more exciting and had excellent WLB almost never worked more than 40 hrs week, when I did it was because I really wanted to solve a particular problem. I have a family and there are otters on my team who work pretty much 7 days a week but it’s by choice, may are lonely single people that need to work to take their minds off of the fact that they are lonely (3 such coworkers told me this explicitly during private conversations) — but this certainly isn’t expected or required if you have a good manager.
