X-Treme Long Distance Commute??? TPM Google
Newly created one-off L7 Was contacted direct by a google recruiter who told me that the specific team for this position had seen my LinkedIn profile and was very interested in me (they hadn’t even seen my resume when they offered me an interview) The position requires two different worlds of experience and degrees which I have and is pretty rare. I was so surprised at first because I live nowhere near CA and I honestly thought it was a hoax of some kind. I even told the recruiter that I would only consider a long distance commute with 4 day office weeks and not a formal move. Then I was told that they were struggling finding the right person and my situation was not ideal but they would accept it if I passed HC. Also told that I could relocate the job back home (close to where I live now) after 12-18 months. When I learned the range of TC I almost fell out of my chair because no one (even the owner of my company) around here makes that much. (425-550 TC). I could work my whole life where I am and not make 1/2 that in a year - granted is not very expensive to live where I do. If I pass this 2nd interview, then it’s onsite. Recruiter acted like onsite is likely. Very few people have applied for the role as far as I can see. The real question is do I really want this job? Cross-country bi-weekly commute! Leaving my cushy partnership position in my hometown? Will Google really change my life that much?? Also - how cheap can I live in Sunnyvale/MV to make the huge change worth it in savings/nest egg for my future? TC: 170k and ps ..... is this recruiter trying to sell me a load of $&@! I really can’t formally move to CA. Thanks for the long read and any response!
Oh yeah that's tough for sure. If they're willing to agree to your conditions I would definitely go for it especially since they're allowing you to relocate home after 12-18 months. I think it would be a great career move but your family would also benefit from it given the higher TC assuming it doesnt get adjusted too low when you permanently relocate back. It seems like with your experience you're in a very unique and advantageous position.
Have you ever heard of a big company or FAANG offering something like this? At L7? Just seems like there are a lot of people in Cali who could do the job 😂. I’m worried the recruiter is just lying to get me hooked!
How many years of experience ? Did google clarify and indicate that it’s a l7 ?
Yeah if they're indicating that I highly doubt they're throwing that out to hook him/her in based on how desperate they seem. Just a guess though
YoE is complicated because I owned a business in one field and worked in the other - but combined YoE 15 Yes. I asked recruiter because I was initially told “just below director” and couldn’t figure it out anywhere. I will have 8-15 direct reports over time (new team being created and hiring for all new positions). Was told L7 role .....
Sounds like a dream opportunity especially if you can move it back to where you live pretty quickly. I say go for it and start squirreling away the extra 💰
It sounded like a dream to me too (one that’s too good to be true!) I never imagined working for google because there is no headquarters in my city and because I’m not a software engineer. Now, I can’t get it out of my head! The work seems incredibly interesting and I feel like I’m willing to give up many of my customary patterns and comforts to be a part of what Google is putting together. Just preparing for the interview process has opened my eyes to so many different possibilities. But I still needed a pep talk. My friends and family will have a hard time accepting it if I left my life and hard earned connections/influence to take this leap. Still....... I think I’m ready to jump!

If you could explain it you probably would have but can you give me an idea of what the circumstances are regarding the reason of not being able to formally relocate to cali?
Kids. Split custody. ; ) It would be one hell of a battle and since I am a single parent - not worth it at TC 500k.
