Felt disrespected and undervalued recently at work and went on a job applying spree one day early in September. After a bunch of interviews, I’ve received and negotiated an offer that I have accepted for 300K TC before October hit the calendar.

My current job:
- 205K TC
- Senior SWE
- ~20-30hrs/week
- mostly remote
- NYC-based

New job:
- 300K TC
- Senior SWE
- November start date
- SF hq but remote-based

Should I keep my current job? And if so, what are the legal/illegal implications? From my understanding, both companies are not in direct/indirect conflict of interest, but I’m not so sure…sos!

  • Won’t the new company require your exit proof from the previous company?

I don’t think so, at least not in my case because new company knows I might stay on as contractor at old company. If I stay on as contractor or full time is unbeknownst by new company though lol

  • No criminal issues as long as you pay all relevant State, local and Federal taxes. Govt doesn’t care as long as it gets paid.

However, this would absolutely be a breach of contract that you can sued by one or BOTH companies. (Imagine two sets of an army of lawyers on your ass…)

The biggest risk is of course you failing at both jobs and losing everything. Is it really worth it? Imagine the stress when both companies are in a crunch mode to deliver something. Given that Big Corps tend to follow the same seasonal patterns, it’s very likely something like that could occur simultaneously.

You’d probably be better off long term improving your skills and getting promotions. If you want a proper side hustle, there are plenty of negotiable opportunities.

As long as you can coast at both places, you’re good my friend!

This trend has been happening. Good way to boost your TC but see if you can manage the stress.

Wanted to hear from the people how do they manage doing two jobs. Did they inform their employers or any implications?
