Canada Vs UK

Nov 7, 2021 43 Comments

Another H-1B holder from a backlogged country looking for options outside the US.

I know people will recommend US because of high TC but visa effects us as a family a lot, we would rather live with freedom at a lower TC then constantly think about visa and perm etc. we are not able to enjoy and it’s taking a toll on us now.

I dont want to go back to my country because I dont think our kids will be able to adjust.

Would really appreciate the help of folks who have lived or researched about both the countries, which would you prefer?

Blind Tax
TC- $330

My unbiased view as someone who has lived in Canada , US and UK

Canada - horrid weather, tricky healthcare ( be very careful about this), a general lethargy with no real cultural activities to speak of in the main cities, national identity is based on hating ever thing about America despite being culturally closest to the US.

High salaries of late and easiest to negotiate an American remote job. Your COL outside Toronto and Vancouver is pretty cheap. Vancouver IMO is a really good city if you have a remote job.
Also public transport sucks in Toronto. Much better in Vancouver and Montreal

UK- Excellent travel opportunities domestic and close to EU, the healthcare potentially suffers from the same issues as Canada but you have the option of private which you don’t have in Canada, You literally cannot get bored in London, Second city for a lot of hedge funds ( after NYC)

Career opportunities should be on par with Canada and anyway in both countries the top jobs are American remote jobs.

I would strongly prefer the UK

Sales force - just my advice. Don’t try to move to either country hoping you can come back to the US . I did that and deeply regret it( from a social perspective). Move somewhere with the intent of establishing your life permanently in that place.
You can always come to the US for short stints ( 6-8 months) and earn some extra $$ on L1

Lived 15 years in Canada. The Canadian healthcare horror stories are largely exaggeration and perhaps have 10-20% truth to them.

I find Toronto and GTA so much better than SF and Bay Area in all aspects(prettier, general infra, cleanliness, homes, people, culture), don’t even know how Bay Area folks love to live in their little bubble. Bay Area hands down has the worst quality of life unless your nw is more than 10mil or something.
Apple can you elaborate why you found it shithole?

Moved to Canada after living 3 years in Bay Area. The peace of visa free life is worth the cut in TC. Moreover, the tech salaries are on the rise in Canada now.

Yes but having a job gives you a lot of points right? If you join a company in US who is moving you to Canada, that offer will give you a lot of points to then hopefully be eligible for a PR?

    • Yeah that was not an option at Salesforce, moving internationally on a visa is very difficult at Salesforce.

Pretty good responses in this post. I would add a couple of more based on my stay in UK.

    1. Tourist visa- Like US, Canada gives a 10 year visa. UK gives a 6 month visa and it’s super expensive. Depending on how frequently you want your parents to travel it’s something to consider.

    2. Housing- While Canada is infamous for housing price on Blind, UK actually is no different. If anything UK specially London is way worse. For the same price you would get a WWII era house/condo in London.

    3. Schools - Matters only if your kids are USC. Canadian curriculum is very similar to US and I believe all qualifications are mutually recognized (like medical). UK curriculum is very different and if you plan to send your kids to US colleges, Canada clearly has an upper hand.

    4. Healthcare- As others have said it’s a nightmare in Canada. UK fares slightly better, but due to proximity you can always go to india for any quick treatment.
