MS 18/6 Contract - what happens at the end ?

May 6, 2021 6 Comments

For MS peeps, do you know what happens at the end of a 18 month contract?

I have heard that for 6 months you will not have access to any tools and will have to work via an intern or contact. OR are you laid off completely meaning your role is replaced by someone else and you have to reapply to another available role within MS?

Do you get your role back after that 6 month period?

When would you know if you are going to get FTE, do they wait till the very end? In my case early 2022

Looking for some insight

These are all questions your vendor company can answer. Yes, you must take 6 months off network at the end of your 18 months, some groups don't work with "guest" access and riding on someone else's credentials is not only unethical but explicitly not allowed as policy. Going FTE is up entirely up to your MSFT stakeholder and not guaranteed. Most vendor companies lay you off when your 18 months end. There is no guarantee, that I've heard of, that you'll have a job waiting after your 6 months are complete. Every vendor company is different, you should talk all this through with your contact there.

No. You have a role for 18 months, then need to find a new role.

By the way, the contract has nothing to do with Microsoft. It's held by a third-party vendor.

Do not count on a conversion.

  • Conversion from v- to FTE is rare at Microsoft from what I saw. Of the vendors that the teams that I worked on went through, only one was successfully converted after the 2nd contract ended. I think the team liked that vendor so much that the on-site interview was basically a formality. That vendor was lucky because after the timeout expired, the team happened to have open FTE headcount.

If you are a contractor, then most likely MS isn’t your employer.
