T-Mobile micromanagement / toxic environment?

Mar 12 78 Comments

I got a couole of friend who work at T-Mobile and they have been complaining more and more about micromanaging from their leadership plus a more and more toxic environment. One of them is about to accept an offer and might even take a pay cut to move out while the other is already actively looking for offers.

Seems the merger with Sprint left the company with the worst of both worlds, unachievable goals and metrics and continuous micromanagement. Where leadership is gone and just management is left asking sometimes more than once a day a status update on every single item they are working on.

I told them they should try and move departments but they say the culture seems different since a year ago and all T-Mobile is toxic now.

Wondering if other people working at T-Mobile feel the same or is this more due to their direct leadership? The work on different departments but under same EVP, so it's definitely not a team only issue.

All of telecom is toxic. It's not the companies it's the service became commodities and they're in a promotion war so everyone is in cost cutting mode

Used to work at TMO. It's toxic at another level. I wouldn't recommend joining TMO. Specially Procurement and Supply Chain.

Disagree that all of telecom is toxic. I left TMO / sprint for AT&T... not getting rich, but a helluva better working environment and culture. Ironically, I fight even harder when up against vz and tmo.

I wouldn’t call TMO toxic (though I can only speak for my personal experience) but it’s definitely not the same TMO that it used to be. Really unfortunate 😞

    • One of my friends has been at T-Mobile for over 15 years and he said it’s not the same company. He feels the reason the company wants people to leave since they are fat from merger. Apparently on April 1 the non vaccinated will be asked to make decisions and the two year agreement with sprint for employee retention expires. Not sure if any of this is true. Just what was said.

Correct on April 1st, anyone who wasn’t starting their vaccinations by middle of Feb were placed on unpaid leave. Can’t speak to retention of Sprint team members.

A big part of me is very glad my last day was earlier this month.

I never thought I would leave T-Mobile. Loved it. Loved that ideas could come from anywhere, we were encouraged to innovate. Then the merger happened. Let’s be honest, the people who survived Sprint to get to the merger are cockroaches - meaning they’ll survive by any means necessary. Now instead of coming together to solve problems, like before, there’s finger pointing and blaming. No one in management will pay attention to projects until they’re an inch from completion and then it is never what they want. Then the yelling and blaming start. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve redone projects because of management whims or their lack of interest (all while trying to engage them). It’s crazy how it can be so hands off and then so micro-managed.

    Fear is rampant.

And if you’re a woman of a certain age, making a certain amount of $, they’ll run you out. Ask 8 women in my department alone.

A lot of us alumni have sought help from mental health professionals. The common theme they have seen is that it’s like an abusive relationship. Stay clear! And those still left, you’re better than that place.

    • The thought of leaving cross my mind everyday. I am typing this at 3:30 am in the morning. It is true that this place drain you mentally. It is not the workload but the constant fire drill and bully culture is very toxic. It makes you feel so lost. I feel like it is a waste of my time. I am contemplating just take a few months off and start looking for opportunities full time. This is how bad it is.

I disagree. I believe the toxic culture was already there. It was brought up once TMo folks started to fear for their jobs. Sprint people are set up for failure. Nothing is written down. Processes are different depending on who you talk to and then there are the people who will not even acknowledge you exist. I believe the two teams could be one if everyone was willing to work with one another for the company goals. Not personal goals but the company.
