Does Apple allow other app stores?

Aug 30, 2020 11 Comments

I'm trying to understand the issue about monopoly here.

Are other app stores allowed on Apple? If they are, then it doesn't look like a monopoly since they're only refusing to publish on their own app store which is fine by me, in theory.

If they don't (or if they make it practically impossible), then I think this is an issue. It's the same as if Microsoft decided no browsers other than edge would be allowed to be used on windows, or that edge would not be able to visit and download another browser. This is definitely anticompetitive.

What's the case here? How easy it is to get another app store? Do I need to jump through a million hoops?

  • Simple google search would tell you that they don’t. But you already knew that right

Is the purpose of this post for the general masses to inform you of the particulars of the matter? Seems reading any given article would achieve that goal more seamlessly.

It is a question but I'm sure people have views on this. I did try searching. Is the purpose of your post to inform that Blind has some sort of guidelines regarding seeking information/feedback? You should link them both - the article for me to read and the guidelines you want to inform me about.

I suppose I could slap a fish in front you in the form of a link to any given article found by simply googling, but that would be a tremendous disservice to you. Being that you tried, and seemingly failed, at searching for this readily available information yourself, better to teach you to fish, as the saying goes. So, here’s how to do it:

      1. Open Google
      2. Search for “Apple Epic games” (or any similar search terms)
      3. Click on articles from preferred publishers, and read them

Voila. You now have the power to educate yourself or answer basic questions on almost any topic. From there, you can pose more specific or interesting questions on Blind -such as soliciting opinions on specific aspects. But, you’ll be well past the basics of what’s happening, and further in your understanding of things like - if Apple allows other app stores on their devices (they most certainly do not).

Being a monopoly in itself isn’t illegal. The Bork standard requires that an action by a monopoly must be bad for the end consumer to be an illegal monopoly action. The argument that Apple wants to control what’s on their phones for UX and safety from spyware and malware is a pretty strong argument. Apple only allowing apps they approve in their phones isn’t bad for the end consumer.
