Would you evaluate engineers from Yahoo differently than those coming from Amazon/Google/Facebook during interviews? Please elaborate.

  • I don't care. Except if you survived in very bad teams in amazon and uber for long periods I'll be watching closer for culture fit

At my old job in Oracle, we did look at where you are coming from. We split 4 rounds into groups of 2. The first 2 rounds were generic and the second 2 rounds were customized to the background. We did this to get get good coders (first 2 rounds) but also see if the candidate was good at something besides leetcode problems (last 2 rounds). Usually, folks coming in from algo-centric companies could solve algo problems easily. So we would focus more on systems, background and if they really enjoyed going in deep. Turns out, while they were good coders, many of them didn't really delve deep into anything. Otoh, folks coming from other companies (Apple, Intel, yahoo, vmware) were slightly weaker in coding but much much better at their domains than the average google/fb/amzn/MS candidate. Eventually, we started assembling a team of misfits who all learned a lot from each other. Good times!

I've seen some of the best eng and PMs I've worked with get turned down by Twitter but get offers from Facebook and Google. Twitter may want to fix its hiring problems.

Don't mean to hijack the thread. But would it matter if you replaced Yahoo with Oracle?

No. I look at years of experience and might ask about what you did there but you have to pass the same technical bar regardless of your background.
