I received an offer from JP Morgan AI Research and wanted to know what people thought of this group. This group is separate from the SWEs and the data scientists, and acts more like Bell Labs or Google Brain from what I have heard, but I would love to gain perspective from those that are in the know. According to LinkedIn, those that work there are all PhD graduates with exceptional research backgrounds. The head of the group is a Carnegie Mellon Professor of CS. Is this a respectable lab, and what are the prospects of transferring to GBrain or FAIR?

  • Hoes be running SOTA models, PoC applications and calling it a day. Difficult to move to Gbrain and FAIR.

If you're interested in cutting edge AI work, lean towards start-ups.

Also what is your area of interest?

  • In Finance first you need to have a good use case and then try to find the best approach/method to solve it. These teams do it backward like they want to work with a fancy NLP model then they try to find a use case for it. Because they don’t have business sense. This is why previous teams like JPMIS, OMNI etc failed and I expect the same happens to the new team in the near future. Go for a real tech research team like google brain. This team is wast of time.

  • As someone said above, it's good research work, much better wlb compare to tech I'd say. They do lot of math, stats, DL etc etc. HOWEVER, it's research work so not all your work goes into production. If that sounds like something you're interested in, go for it.

  • I work with them on a project. The people have top-notch backgrounds and they do interesting work. That said there is a bit of a disconnect between what they do and what actually makes the firm money. They get a lot of funding so your TC should be pretty good.

It all comes down to your goals. Good place to do research, not so good if your goal is to have something to show for it to move to buy side.
