Microsoft, even as a contractor, will boost your resume more than a credit union. What’s the TC breakdown?

i’ve actually done both - i worked for a credit union before joining Intel and honestly - night and day. there’s minimal room for real growth in a credit union, and the work isn’t super challenging even at best. i was mid level at the credit union and didn’t work on anything half as interesting and challenging as i did my first year at the bottom rung of Intel.

you need to think about what matters most - challenge, growth, money, work/life balance, security, etc. contractor feels less secure, so if that’s super important to you that role will likely make you feel stressed the whole time, but if challenge or growth are important to you, the risk of contract for a shot at something bigger might feel better. TC matters, but also it may not be your first consideration and that’s ok. just have to decide what you want to optimize for first.

edit: I was in finance too - i was an auditor and then moved to corporate finance.

You know? This is why I am wondering. If I’m 10 years younger, there’s no any doubt that I will choose the contract job, doesn’t matter about the package, it’s all about the future opportunities. Now I need to consider my health and family commitments…but deep in my heart, I want to give a try, and I know the later I wait the less chance I will have, and it’ll be a forever unfulfilling dream…

This is the 2nd time I got non-MS offer. Both teams like me so much, and were willing to push their limits to meet my needs. I know eventually I will settle to companies like them after I achieved my dream company, I guess I am just not ready yet…but what’s the point to make a circle? Get myself more valuable?

Credit unions work was really boring for me. Plus they don't pay as well as banks. Go Microsoft.

I think if you are a contractor there is some kind of policy that you cant be re-hired within 18 months of the end of your contract. Not sure what the specifics are. May want to check

    • In the US, a vendor (V-) contract has a maximum of 18 months with corporate access and then a 6-month access break is required before you are eligible to return on another V- contract. I believe you are eligible for unemployment benefits during the break.
