Joined Amazon <1 year ago as a new grad. Manager is decent, good WLB, but really mind-numbingly boring work. Performing pretty well and manager is setting aggressive promo target which is cool. Despite my job going well, I feel like I'm wasting my life writing some stupid backend code , debating trivialities in design with peers etc. I'm learning a lot but for the most part I feel like there are better ways to learn it without having to dedicate my time to the job.

I feel the symptoms of burnout despite not really working that much which is an indication to me that the problems I work on are really silly since I'm generally willing to work really hard if I find something interesting. I want to quit and maybe find some startups, work at Tesla/SpaceX or maybe even do my own company. That being said admittedly I'm a bit insecure about what my parents or peers would think about me quitting a privileged job especially during the time of Corona. Also for new companies it will take some time to brush my interview skills but I'm less concerned about that. I feel stuck and concerned that I'll never be satisfied. Any advice or am I just delusional about reality?

Sorry for the wall of text btw

99% of all employees feel they are doing the most boring work and everyone else is doing amazing work.

I had the same feeling and naively acted on it and joined a startup to do real engineering, man do I regret it 😵, even getting simple stuff put together is a challenge, most of my time is spent firefighting shit I or someone else broke ...

  • Your job doesn’t have to define you. Sounds like you want more. Time to dig deep and think about what you really want. Don’t quit your job yet, you can easily find yourself at a different job feeling the same.

Set a target. Devote 30 minutes to an hour each day towards that goal. Take small steps in the right direction. Eventually, you’ll start finding meaningful work. Fight back 🥊

  • Invest time on yourself. Start a small business, start a blog, write a tech book, build your brand. You feel that way because your time is spent on someone else’s work (the company), which most people don’t find meaningful, but it’s the easiest way to gain money.
