Wanted to see if there are any tech auditors here who work at google. I am finding it hard to connect to get feedback about how they like their jobs, are they happy etc. I have never worked in internal audit before. I worked as a programmer at a smaller tech firm.

The IA team told me that they need tech talent with python and sql proficiency and it was google so I joined. I wanted it know from other tech auditors or other product what they feel about :
a) how IA is viewed ?
b) salary progression
c) do u feel u are doing meaningful work ?

What do tech auditors do that cannot be automated through static analysis tools? I’m assuming you should be writing runbooks and building these tools, teams should be integrating with these?

I think what u are thinking of tech auditors in big 4 etc. The work in big tech is a bit different. There can be a government regulation that needs to be abided by abs engineers need to fix that code. Than tech auditors come in to do a code review of the logic, sample test the outputs and give recommendations if they are inaccurate.

In some cases ML model classifiers are used and sometimes they don’t capture the entire population space and tech auditors need to point that out which leads to a bug.

Not sure if there any tools for this ? And if there are I would love to know

The number of tech auditors needs to scale with number of teams and products, if manual code review and testing are the need? Maybe tools for fuzz testing inputs and outputs, etc?

Not sure about the ML world

  • A. IA is viewed as something that needs to be done and can not be messed up. It keeps the other orgs in check. You will perpetually be in an audit cycle which consists of pinpointing an area to test, getting documentation from people, and filling out forms.

Salary progression: much better than audit consulting, much worse than SWE.

    C) not very meaningful, sorry.

What was ur exp working with them ? Did u feel the work they did added value ? Would u consider working in such a role ?

    • No it wasn’t that meaningful or value add. Pretty similar to what you do in a normal audit consulting role. I would not work in that role but I’m fully in SWE now. I think it was good for early in my career because I did learn a lot about business and people skills
