Will ARKit (Apple) usher in a new "big" push in terms of being something that drives the mindshare in tech and in various business sectors (education, medical, logistics, media, etc.) for the next, say 5 to 7 years? What say y'all?
No
it's a passing fad. AR/VR/Hololens. Hasn't anyone learnt anything from the Google Glass flop?
Maybe in 20 years you'll have mass adoption. It's novelty now but will eventually be yuge.
I agree AR hardware that isn't gimmicky yet small and affordable enough to go mainstream is probably another 10 years away. VR is a little more mature but also still another 5 years away from mass adoption.
Oh yeah and AR on a phone definitely is gimmicky to me. Haven't seen a proper use case yet except maybe real time translation of stuff.
What? What about virtual mustaches? It's why Snap is worth $18B.
So Apple is just using AR as a way to sell the phones iyho?
The big thing is AR is seeing industrial/military adoption which will impact whether it survives moreso than consumer applications. At least in this early phase.
