I am going to talk to recruiter about that option before start interviewing but want to hear what Googlers here say

I am comparing Austin vs Tampa.
Position is for Austin , but I live in Tampa.

As of now Google is mostly anti remote work in the long run. If you want to work remote and can pass Google SWE interviews, go for a remote friendly company instead.

Also never tell companies your current comp under any circumstances…

Just delay it until the end of the process and then get competing offers from similar-tier companies.

You’ll get way higher comp if you effectively make Google compete with, say, FB, vs competing with your current comp.

My move is to flip the question and ask what the comp range is for the role. Try that first. If they flip and dodge try stating that your desired comp for this particular role is X. If they press again, say that your current role comp isn’t relevant to the conversation because it’s not the same JD. This works extremely well for me. Like I’ve doubled my salary twice since I figured this out. Best of luck.

From Tampa, lived in Austin for the last 5 years. Very similar vibe and cost of living. Neither city are as cheap as you think but not insanely expensive. Both have a lot of sprawl too so keep that in mind when evaluating costs - living somewhere that’s not the ‘burbs will cost substantially more. Totally fair to compare the two financially. FL is def less of a tech hub so less local talent available.

I was sr level at an Austin based tech company that went public this year and my TC was around $120 depending on bonus, base $105…I had 8 years experience at the time. Your offer might be kinda low?

I’m not a huge fan of either TBH. I moved to Brooklyn last month.

I enjoy visiting both and don’t want to live in either again. I’d put Tampa slightly higher maybe? Every time I go home I’m impressed by how the city has changed or grown. Somehow Tampa manages to do this while still retaining a lot of its heritage which I find cool. But it really depends what you like?

Politics: Tampa is a little less liberal but still split pretty even. I’m queer so this was important to me. Austin is “blue” but it doesn’t take much to find a trumper. You’re still in Texas and you will not forget that. The abortion ban was honestly the last straw for me. I don’t feel that Texas values women, minorities, LGTBQ people, or disabled people.

Art/film/music etc: Tampa hands down has better museums and theater. They both do an ok job supporting the arts if you look hard enough. Both have an independent film theater and art walk type things. I will say Tampa’s Cuban heritage is more interesting and peppered into the city. Austin is extremely white and you feel it all the time. Unless you consider BBQ and country music heritage. I’m not a fan of either so. Tampa by far is more diverse. People of different backgrounds interact more there too. Idk how to explain it but it’s like the Mexican heritage here isn’t felt strongly outside of stealing their food. Other ethnicities are also more segregated in this state. For example: I have an Asian friend and her PUBLIC high school in Houston was 80% Asian. Houston on that topic is FAR more diverse. Music scene is maybe slightly better in Austin. Lots of artists tour through both. If you lean more country, blues free live music leans a tiny bit more that way but I think that’s just a general thing.

Food: Austin is slightly better but if you love Cuban food you’ll miss it. There’s one place here and it’s okay. Tampa’s food scene has been improving over the years. Mexican food here is great. Lots of BBQ and southern if you like that. Asian food is lacking in comparison to other metropolitan cities. I like the bars etc here more but I think it may just be bc I left Tampa at 18 and only go back to see family and that’s not their bag. I’d say the breweries in both cities are same level. Both good.

Dating: I’m a bi woman in my early 30s. Can’t really speak to dating in Tampa (I moved to downtown ish Orlando at 18) but Austin scene is okay. As mentioned earlier, I’m liberal. If this is also you, and you date men you will spend a lot of time weeding out men that say they are moderate but Texas moderate is really a standard republican who just doesn’t like trump. I found a lot of classic family values stuff and it’s almost like the men themselves if they were raised here didn’t realize it affected them. Not all men are like this but you definitely have to sift through. Most men in Austin have the same hobbies and kinda blend together. A lot of wanting a wife to drag to a home in the suburbs and stay home with the kids types. I liked dating women here. Small queer scene.

Not cultural but weather is important. I wish someone had told me if you don’t like FL summers you will HATE the ones in TX. TX summers are brutal. They made me long for that daily 3 pm summer thunderstorm in FL. They’re around 100 degrees and much drier. Fewer people here have pools (random quirk I noticed) and most people go to the greenbelt and natural springs in the city which are both great. Tampa, if you’ve left tampa has many incredibly beautiful springs and a beach within an hour of the city. The summers in Austin are so hot you will never want to be outside in them if you can help it. Fall and spring are beautiful in Austin and are our sit outside seasons.

Last random thing that’s maybe culture…neither city is really walkable. Both of the cool areas in each are small neighborhoods around downtown rather than Central downtown which in both leans more toward offices than fun. East Austin is your Seminole Heights. West Lake is your Avila/Chevalier/Corey Lake Isles/Harbor Island but there is nothing as breathtaking as bay shore here. I find the historic neighborhoods in Tampa have more personality and individual character. South Austin still has some flavor depending where you are. North Austin is all suburban and like any other suburbs in any other major city. Honestly don’t move there. The last of North Austin that has personality is Hyde Park, North Loop, and the Triangle. After that it gets to be all the same.
